Nissan has finally taken the wraps off the new Qashqai crossover, which will go on sale in Europe from February next year, and subsequently in other markets around the world. The new Qashqai is longer and wider than the model it replaces, but is lower in height.

Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s new Common Module Family, or CMF, the Qashqai is the first product to utilise this new architecture. The Qashqai, which has proven so popular, with over two million units sold to date, also carries over most of the best bits that made it popular in the first place. So, it gets a choice of four engines, including two diesel and two petrol engines, and the option of four-wheel drive. Nissan is also offering its X-Tronic CVT transmission on some models.

Style-wise, the new Qashqai is immediately recognisable as a Nissan. The Qashqai’s proportions lend themselves perfectly to the crossover styling, and the signature Nissan grille plays a definite part here. Overall, the new Qashqai moves the styling forward without being two radical, and sticks to the template that consumers have gotten accustomed to and embraced. It is 49 mm longer, 20 mm wider and 15 mm lower than the model it replaces. Yet, it is 40 kg lighter, thanks to intelligent construction techniques.

The Nissan Qashqai features McPherson strut front suspension, with a simple torsion beam rear axle for the front-wheel drive variants, while the four-wheel drive versions get a more sophisticated multi-link axle arrangement. Nissan has dubbed the all-wheel drive system ALL-MODE 4x4-i, but it does not feature a low range transfer case, or differential locks, so it is definitely not a full-fat off-road car to be sure. Four engines are on offer, and all four are turbocharged. These include 1.2-litre DIG-T petrol with 120 PS, 1.6-litre DIG-T with 150 PS, 1.5 dCi with 110 PS and a 1.6 dCi diesel with 130 PS. The X-Tronic CVT is optional with all the engines, whereas the four-wheel drive is only offered on the 1.6 DIG-T petrol and 1.6 dCi diesel.

Nissan has packed the the new Qashqai with safety kit, which includes radar activated braking and cruise control, electronic safety programmes, parking assist, lane change assist, blind spot monitoring etc. On the inside, the company has spent time to make the Qashqai more inviting to spend time in, and features like variable mood lighting are also offered. Some neat innovations, like a slot in the centre glovebox lid for a USB cable, allows users to keep their phones or iPods plugged in and yet use their device even when the lid is closed.

Nissan has also introduced NissanConnect on the new Qashqai, which is an infotainment system with plug-and-play functionality for smartphones. There’s a 7-inch touchscreen to navigate all the apps, and a ‘send to car’ feature as well, which allows to customers to plan their journey on their smartphone GPS in advance, which then seamlessly plugs in to the car’s navigation system.

Final trim levels and variant details will be revealed only closer to the launch, but Nissan has confirmed sales of the new Qashqai will begin in February 2014, with the first batch of cars slated for launch in the UK. While a “+2” version of the new Qashqai hasn’t been announced yet, it would be fair to surmise that such a model would be an eventuality, and could be particularly useful as a product line for the Indian market. Nissan Motor India Pvt Ltd (NMIPL), has remained famously tight-lipped about the Qashqai's prospects for India, with the focus strongly on its low-cost Datsun range for 2014.
