Front-end styling boasts of "A-Wing", set to become a signature AMG design cue.

The manic AMG range of performance saloons from Mercedes-Benz has gotten crazier still, with the introduction of the new E 63 AMG S-Model. Headline figures are 593 PS, 800 Nm and 0-100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds.

Supermom’s care of choice, the E 63 AMG S-Model is available as a sedan and estate, although the S-Model estate is just a little bit slower, taking 3.7 seconds to 100km/h. Top speed is electronically limited to ‘only’ 250 km/h, like in most responsible manic-quick German performance cars.

Despite the huge power and torque and undeniably quick acceleration, Mercedes-Benz claims the E 63 AMG S-Model will travel 10.2 kilometres for every litre of petrol.

The E 63 AMG S-Model is powered by AMG’s own 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, coupled to AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission. There are four driving modes – "C" (Controlled Efficiency), "S" (Sport), "S+" (Sport plus) and "M" (Manual). In "C" mode, the ECO start/stop function is active and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. In addition, the transmission characteristics are tangibly soft, with smooth and early gear changes. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

To ensure all the horses don’t come unhitched, Mercedes-Benz has fitted the S-Model with a locked rear differential.

The E 63 AMG comes with speed-sensitive electromechanical steering, whose feedback is also governed by the driving mode selected. Carbon ceramic brakes are optional, and are ‘only’ 402 mm, or 16 inches in diameter! Of course, these brakes come painted with ‘AMG Carbon Ceramic’ detailing on the calipers.

All the exterior highlights aside, a Merc isn’t a Merc unless it is replete with the finest accoutrements. In the E 63 AMG S-Model, you get Alcantara leather sport seats and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo with 1200 W, a digital sound processor and Dolby 5.1.

Deliveries commence in April 2013. And oh, we almost forgot; for the faint hearted, there’s a tamer E 63 AMG (not the S-Model), with only 560 PS and 720 Nm, which gets to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which seems like an eternity by comparison.
