range rover evoque convertible concept

Land Rover will display the Range Rover Convertible Concept at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland next month. This concept vehicle has been developed by Land Rover’s Design Director Gerry McGovern. Commenting on the concept, McGovern said: "The Evoque lends itself beautifully to the idea of a convertible. This study is not a traditional convertible design execution - instead we have worked with the balance of the Evoque's lines to retain its distinctive shape and create something that is unique and, we believe, highly desirable."

Based on the Evoque Coupe, the Convertible Concept features a fully-retractable sliding soft-top. However, Land Rover claims the Concept has been optimised to meet crash requirements with a state-of-the-art Roll-over Protection System (ROPS). Further it is claimed that the convertible structure does not take away much form the rigidity of the structure, and that the increase in weight has been kept to a minimum. Of course, there are no official figures to back up these claims just yet, and Land Rover insists that this is just a one-off concept vehicle, intended to gauge feedback from visitors to the motor show. The mechanicals are shared with the Evoque Coupe, including the engine and suspension.

No production plans have been finalised yet, but of course don’t be too surprised if Land Rover announce they are going to build it. There is indeed a growing market for stylish, seemingly niche vehicles, and the Range Rover Evoque Convertible could be the ideal foil for just such a customer demographic.
