The new hi-tech production at Bosch’s quality production house: the hydraulic full-hybrid powertrain has established the fact that frugality can be entertaining. The technology, which Bosch has been working upon in close association with PSA Peugeot Citroen, is definite in its target setting: to come up with a hydraulic hybrid powertrain that will considerably lower the fuel intake and CO2 emissions in compact cars. The mechanism is also perfectly suitable with passenger cars from other vehicle segments, as well as light delivery trucks running in urban environments.
The hydraulic hybrid has been engineered to offer a boost effect that is generally a part of the complex electric drives. But, in this case a general internal-combustion engine mingles with hydraulic units and an accompanying nitrogen pressure accumulator to ensure a short yet effect pump up to acceleration. Bosch and PSA Peugeot Citroen have identified immense potential in this environment-friendly technology. To cope up with the new European driving cycle, it carries the capacity to lower fuel consumption by up to 30 per cent vis-à-vis a conventional internal-combustion engine. It will greatly effective in city areas; during exclusive urban driving, the effectiveness in fuel economy enhances to a optimum level of 45 per cent. Naturally, thanks to its offering, the range of a compact car can be significantly augmented using this alternative powertrain. Hydraulic Motor that Powers the Wheels
One of the excellent features of this hybrid system is that it makes proper use of energy that generally goes to waste in case of conventional mechanism. Take the example of applying brakes. Braking instantly fills up the hydraulic accumulator: the kinetic energy stored during braking is transformed into hydraulic energy and accumulates in the pressure accumulator. In general cases, this energy would have gone to waste, turning into heat in the friction linings of the brakes. The benefits of using a hybrid powertrain are clearly identifiable when the vehicle runs at a steady speed. Here, the engine can be operated within an efficient range while also filling the hydraulic energy accumulator.
This hydraulic-mechanical mechanism stands for a low-cost, vigorous, and easy-to-service hybrid powertrain. Since it does not perform on specialised infrastructure, it can easily be used all around the globe.
A Peek into the Technical Operations
Besides using a conventional internal-combustion engine, the mechanism of a hydraulic hybrid powertrain is also equipped with a pressure accumulator and a reservoir. Hydraulic units squeeze a gas cushion using hydraulic fluid. Fluid and gas distinctively separated. The gas cushion hoards energy by the gas being condensed rather like a coiled spring. At this point, the pressure in the system touches over 300 bar. However, the amount of storable energy in the pressure accumulator is equally proportionate to the size of the system. When the pressure within the accumulator is relaxed, the system works in reverse. The gas expands once again, releasing a compressive force on the hydraulic fluid and driving a hydraulic motor. This motor receives the stored energy and sends it back to the vehicle through the transmission.
It is to be accepted that the pressure accumulator comes with a limited capacity and range when compared with the lithium-ion batteries that are fitted into the electric cars. However, it offers a significant advantage over the lithium-ion batteries, i.e. – the pressure accumulator is a super-quick mechanism to be recharged and can utilise the extra energy provided by the internal-combustion engine more efficiently.

Partnership between Bosch and PSA
The intimate collaboration between Bosch and PSA Peugeot Citroen owes its origin to an engineering tie-up that was formed in 2008. In 2011, this strategic partnership tasted its shares of success when Peugeot launch the 3008 HYbrid4, the world’s maiden series-produced diesel hybrid passenger car with axle-split drive. PSA Peugeot Citroen manufactured the car’s electrical components (electric motor, power electronics, and high-voltage generator) in close collaboration with Bosch. Furthermore, this partnership also produced the special technical platform needed to use the ESP (electronic stability program) in hybrid vehicles. The hybrid powertrain concept can also be found in PSA’s Peugeot 508 (both the RXH station wagon and the HYbrid4 sedan) and Citroen DS5 HYbrid4 models, for which Bosch supplies the electrical powertrain apparatus.
