Ford Fiesta - Introduction

Ford is gearing up to launch the 2014 Ford Fiesta in India sometime later this month. With a stunning new look, revised interiors, improved safety and several segment-first features like the globally acclaimed SYNC with Ford AppLink, the American carmaker is aiming to carve a niche for itself in the mid-size sedan segment.


Powered by the 1.5-litre Duratorq engine, the diesel-only Ford Fiesta will be available in three trims – base Ambiente, mid-range Trend and top-of-the-line Titanium. The 2014 Ford Fiesta will be available in seven vibrant colours including two exciting new ones – Golden Bronze (new), Smoke Grey (new), Diamond White, Panther Black, Moondust Silver, Kinetic Blue and Paprika Red.


With just a few days remaining before the new Fiesta is launched in the Indian market, Ford invited us to be part of a media drive experience that was held in and around India’s IT capital – Bangalore. We got behind the wheel of the top-of-the-line Ford Fiesta Titanium and traversed through a mixed bag of terrains and conditions ranging from the traffic infested and slightly uneven roads of Bangalore to the beautiful open stretches of the Bangalore-Mysore highway to get a feel of how the car behaves on different road surfaces and conditions. Ford Fiesta - Design & Engineering

One look is all you need. The 2014 Ford Fiesta is a showstopper with its sculpted bodyline, Aston Martin-inspired front grille with chrome slats, redesigned front bumper and fog lamps, sleek wraparound headlamps and a new bonnet design.


Ford’s designers worked on redesigning the exterior of the Fiesta to make it more stylish while retaining the overall character and seem to have done a praiseworthy job. The 2014 Ford Fiesta’s face is dominated by a trapezoidal front grille – a signature of Ford’s new global family – flanked by laser-cut stylish headlamps. The masculine and aggressive hood design adds to the boldness, giving the new Fiesta a more assertive and confident appeal.


The style is well defined along the sides as well, with clean design lines, muscular wheel arches and a swooping roofline. The new alloy wheels add to the overall look of the car. The rear of the refreshed Ford Fiesta sports new tail lights that are slightly larger than the outgoing model. The new rear spoiler integrated with the deck lid and bumper fascia; along with the addition of chrome accent in the lower bumper fascia enhances the car’s visual appeal.

Furthermore, the sculpted bodyline of the updated Ford Fiesta results in better aerodynamic efficiency by cutting the air with least resistance. Our interaction with designers at Ford revealed that the new Fiesta was tested more than 150 hours in the wind tunnel to refine its aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in a 3 per cent reduction in drag, further benefitting fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. Ford also claims that improvements have been achieved in part through revisions to the front air-deflector design, the introduction of a new rear spoiler, and careful configuration of light units to separate air flow and reduce the vehicle’s wake.


The suspension set of the facelifted Ford Fiesta comprise of independent McPherson strut with coil spring and anti-roll bar at the front with semi-independent twist beam with gas filled twin shock absorbers at the rear. The suspension has been retuned and made softer in comparison to the outgoing model for a more comfortable ride. Ventilated discs on the front with drums at the rear ensure that the new Ford Fiesta stops promptly. Ford has admittedly worked on the NVH levels ensuring that very little clatter of the 1.5-litre Duratorq diesel powertrain and external noise filters into the passenger cabin thereby attaining more refinement in comparison to its predecessor. 


2014 Ford Fiesta Alloy


The new Ford Fiesta will be available with a single powertrain – 1.5-litre Duratorq diesel – after Ford decided to drop the 1.5-litre Duratec petrol from the Fiesta range owing to the lack of demand. A conversation with representatives at Ford India has revealed that there are no plans of adding petrol variants at a later date neither are there any talks of introducing the EcoBoost engine in the Fiesta range in the near future. Also the 2014 Ford Fiesta will be offered in three diesel trims – Ambiente, Trend and Titanium in comparison to the outgoing model which was offered with two petrol manual (Ambiente and Titanium+), two petrol automatic (Style and Titanium+), and two diesel (Style and Titanium+) variants.

Step inside the new Ford Fiesta and you will notice refreshed interior with a two tone charcoal black and light earth grey colour scheme. The new ‘mobile phone-inspired’ dashboard looks neatly designed blending aesthetics with functionality while the ice-blue illumination amps up the design of the instrument panel making details quick and easy to read while at the same time giving the Fiesta a cool look. The 2014 Fiesta features a high-gloss finish for the upper instrument panel that flows to the lower center console, which is replicated in door panels. The plastics used are of good quality and the surface and knobs feel nice to touch and feel.


The revised Ford Fiesta boasts of spacious passenger cabin and features redesigned front seats which provide better overall support and comfort. They are well bolstered, with ample support for your thighs, shoulders and lower back. The steering wheel adjusts for rake but not for reach. The rear bench isn’t really the most comfortable but spacious enough to accommodate three abreast. However, no leather upholstery even on the Titanium trim which was earlier offered on the petrol automatic Titanium+ variant. The 440 litre boot (up by 10 litre compared to the outgoing model) is ideal for your extended weekend trips and can accommodate up to four medium size suitcases.

Barring the redesigned exterior, another highlight of the 2014 Ford Fiesta was the introduction of its globally-renowned, SYNC with Ford AppLink which was earlier offered with the Ford EcoSport. This in-car connectivity platform, which is only available on the top-range Titanium trim, allows customers to access their smartphone applications through simple voice-commands. The first three applications available for Ford AppLink in India includes two country specific apps – explore by MapMyIndia and ESPN Cricinfo, and one global app – Glympse.


Ford takes a great amount of pride in this technology and aims to provide customers with seamless connectivity while allowing them to stay connected to their world while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Using the hands-free technology of SYNC, drivers can connect their mobile phone to their 2014 Ford Fiesta via Bluetooth or USB. Once their mobile phone is paired, the drivers can use either the steering wheel mounted control, central console or voice commands to manage their smartphone applications through Ford AppLink.


Now, while all the voice-activated controls in the new Fiesta might sound quite exciting, but bear in mind, that like any new technology this needs getting used to. You need to first learn a set of commands to operate the system and the system isn’t full-proof as we discovered. Besides, I’m sure that a lot of you, similar to me might just be interested in owning a car that looks and drives well rather than racking your brains in decoding technology.


Features such as tilt adjust steering, front and rear power windows, guide me home headlamps, foldable rear seat, height adjustable drivers seat and electrically adjustable ORVMs comes as standard across model range. The Titanium trim that we drove additionally came equipped with ambient lighting, rain sensing wipers, push button start/stop, digital clock, electrically foldable ORVMs, fuel computer and distance to empty indicator.

Ford Fiesta - Performance & Handling

Having done away with the 1.5-litre petrol, the 2014 Ford Fiesta is now only available with the 1.5-litre Duratorq diesel motor mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine produces 91 PS of maximum power at 3,750 rpm and churns out 204 Nm of peak torque at 2,000-2,750 rom. The engine comes to life with a slight clatter but remain relatively quiet till about 2,000 rpm after which it starts becoming slightly noisy with a some of that filtering inside the passenger cabin but not to the extent of annoying you.


We did notice some turbo lag up to 1800-1900 rpm but the torque starts building linearly past the 2,000 rpm mark. Mid-range torque is satisfactory, however, the diesel pot runs out of breath beyond 4,000 rpm and feels underpowered as we noticed while cruising on the open stretches of the Bangalore-Mysore highway. So it’s advisable to stay between 2,000-3,500 rpm for better engine response and drivability. In comparison, two of its competitors which we have tested recently - the Skoda Rapid and Fiat Linea - accelerates impressively with linear power delivery and excellent torque available throughout rev range with good in-gear experience. 


Steering feedback is fantastic, however, the slightly heavy steering could prove tiresome while driving for longer durations of time. The gearbox has a long throw but the shift action is relatively light and smooth too. Handling and ride quality is impressive with Ford retuning the suspension and making it softer resulting in a more comfortable ride even while negotiating potholes and bumps. The new Ford Fiesta also remains firmly grounded at high speeds and body-roll is well contained even while cutting quick corners. So overall, the 2014 Ford Fiesta came across as a hassle free and pleasant car to drive, but not really an enthusiast’s choice. A little more power definitely would have done the trick. 


Ford Fiesta - Fuel Efficiency

We didn’t get an opportunity to perform a real world mileage test, however, the new Ford Fiesta claims an ARAI-ratified fuel efficiency of 25.01 kmpl, up by almost 1.5 kmpl in comparison to the outgoing model.

Similar to the outgoing model, the 2014 Ford Fiesta comes equipped with front driver-side airbag, ABS with EBD, central locking and engine immobilizer as standard across all variants. The top-of-the-line Titanium trim that we tested along with the mid-range Trend trim also get front passenger airbag. Rain sensing wipers, automatic adjusting headlamps and reverse parking sensors which are only offered on the top Titanium trim further adds convenience and safety.


The 2014 Ford Fiesta’s safety offerings also include Emergency Assistance (EA) via SYNC which helps connect vehicle occupants with emergency services following an accident, providing vehicle location and open line communication.

For me, the highlight of the 2014 Ford Fiesta is its bold and aggressive new design. In terms of looks, the new Fiesta is a showstopper with its sculpted bodyline, Aston Martin-inspired front grille, redesigned front bumper and fog lamps, sleek wraparound headlamps and a new bonnet design. It has got everyone talking and is most definite to win many fans. Move inside the new Ford Fiesta and you are welcome with a spacious, premium looking refreshed interiors that successfully blends aesthetics with functionality. Performance and handling is just as good as the outgoing model but a little more power would have certainly been welcomed. At an ARAI-ratified 25.01 kmpl, the Ford Fiesta claims to be frugal too. So, Ford definitely has put together a good all round package. Now what they need is the perfect pricing strategy. Both the earlier generations had failed to rake in the numbers due to premium pricing. Hope Ford gets it right this time.
