Ford Figo 2015 - Introduction
Built on Ford’s latest global platform, the all-new Figo is an able and worthy successor to one of Ford’s most well-known and trusted nameplates in India. Available in six trims– Base, Ambiente, Trend, Trend+, Titanium and Titanium+ – the customers can choose from three fuel efficient, powerful and responsive engines – 1.2-litre TiVCT, 1.5-litre TDCi and 1.5-litre TiVCT.
With an introductory price of Rs 4.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new Ford Figo takes on the likes of Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Grand i10. We got behind the wheel of the second generation Ford Figo – 1.5-litre TiVCT petrol and 1.5-litre TDCi diesel – for a drive from Delhi to Agra and back. Read on to find out what we discovered.
Ford Figo 2015 - Design & Engineering
The dynamic design and sleek styling of the second generation Ford Figo sets it apart from other hatchbacks in its segment. Viewed head on, the Aston Martin inspired bold trapezoidal grille and elongated headlamps gives the new Ford Figo a masculine and sporty appearance.
The chrome highlights and details in the headlight design further add a premium touch. The swept-back line of the windshield and A-pillars not only give the Ford Figo a dynamic appearance, but also enhances aerodynamic performance resulting in better fuel efficiency.
A well-proportioned tailgate and an accentuated character line running through to the tail lamp cluster enhance overall width. A bold shoulder on both sides merges well with the taillamps, giving the all-new Figo sense of motion. The designers and engineers at Ford deserve a pat on the back for delivering a looker.
The new Ford Figo boasts of confident inspiring braking with ventilated disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear. Suspension set up comprise of the conventional independent McPherson strut on the front and semi-independent twist beam at the rear as seen on most of the front-wheel drive cars. However, the NVH levels were not very refined with a lot of external noise filtering inside the passenger cabin.
Ford Figo 2015 - Interiors & Comfort
The dynamic exterior of the new Ford Figo is matched by a contemporary interior done up in black colour scheme. Intelligent and careful space management creates a surprisingly roomy cabin as the second generation Ford Figo also offers no fewer than 20 smart storage spaces and convenience features.
Best-in-class wheelbase of 2,491 mm translates in plenty of legroom in the front which will give the front passengers enough space to stretch out. In the rear, adequate roominess will allow three adults to sit abreast with decent head and shoulder room.
Reflecting the growing need for consumers to stay connected at all times, the new Ford Figo comes equipped with MyFord Dock, which offers drivers a unique solution for storing, mounting and charging mobile phones, MP3 players and satellite navigation systems, and for integrating these devices into the car’s entertainment system. When not in use, the dock can be closed out of sight.
The top Titanium trim also comes equipped with SYNC with AppLink, Ford’s advanced in-car connectivity system which allows drivers to control their phone, entertainment and apps hands-free using simple voice commands. In India, drivers with AppLink can access information about nearby attractions and food destinations with Explore by MapMyIndia, and keep themselves updated with the latest cricket scores and upcoming fixtures with ESPN Cricinfo. The secure global location-sharing app, Glympse, also lets drivers share their location.
The new Ford Figo boasts of a 257 litre boot space. The rear bench can be folded flat to make room for more luggage if the need shall arise.
Ford Figo 2015 - Performance & Handling
The second generation Ford Figo will be offered with a choice of three engine options –1.2-litre Ti-VCT petrol and 1.5-litre TDCi diesel mated to 5-speed manual transmission and 1.5-litre TiVCT petrol engine mated to 6-speed automatic transmission. All the three engines also power the recently launched Ford Figo Aspire compact sedan. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that Ford has kept the power and torque output unchanged in the smaller hatch, which has resulted in making the new Ford Figo the most powerful car in its segment.
To kick things off, we first got behind the wheel of the Figo 1.5-litre TiVCT petrol. The petrol powerplant is smooth and very responsive. The new Figo 1.5-litre petrol delivers more than adequate power for a hatchback of its size and was a pleasure to drive on the highway. Overtaking cars on open stretches of the Yamuna Expressway was as effortless as a walk in the park and we managed to clock a top speed of 190 kmph. Even at substantial high speeds the new Ford Figo remained calm and poised which is quite phenomenal for a hatchback. The steering feedback was excellent as it weighed up steadily with increasing acceleration. The only hitch was the six-speed automatic transmission which takes a wee bit longer to find the right gear ratio and results in a slight lag during those brief moments. Barring that, the 1.5-litre petrol Figo is an enthusiast’s choice.
Up next, we laid our hands on the new Ford Figo diesel. The 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine boasts of admirable power and drivability. On the go the engine exhibits no turbo lag and the power delivery is very linear. Even at low speeds and in high gear the engine doesn't knock or stalls and pulls quite well from low revs, making it ideal car both within the city and on the highways. The car handles well and remains poised at high speed similar to its petrol sibling. Traction is good and there isn’t much body roll even while going through quick corners. The suspension is tuned perfectly for Indian roads and absorbs jerks and undulations while cruising over broken and uneven patches resulting in a plush ride quality. It was a joy to drive the diesel on the highway and we managed a top speed of 185 kmph. However, the 5-speed manual transmission felt slightly notchy and leaves room for improvement.
Ford Figo 2015 - Fuel Efficiency
The new Ford Figo 1.2-litre Ti-VCT petrol engine claims an ARAI-ratified fuel economy of 18.16 kmpl while the 1.5-litre TDCi diesel engine boasts of an ARAI-certified fuel economy of 25.83 kmpl. Both of these engines are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. Ford Figo Aspire 1.5L TiVCT petrol engine delivers a fuel economy of 17 kmpl. Although, we didn’t get an opportunity to test the real world fuel efficiency figures, however, interacton with the previous generation Figo owners have revealed that the Ford Figo is quite frugal to run.
Ford Figo 2015 - Safety
For the past many years, Ford has been championing the cause of safety in the cars they put on the road and the all-new Figo is no exception. Designed from ground up with safety as one of its key differentiators, the second generation Ford Figo is equipped with driver airbag as standard across the entire range. From second variant onwards, the new Figo will offer standard dual front airbags across the entire lineup. The all-new Figo is the only car in its segment to offer up to six airbags – including side and curtain airbags - for all round protection.
If the vehicle experiences a serious collision, Emergency Assistance uses SYNC and a Bluetooth-paired phone to automatically call emergency responders and provide information about the vehicle and location.
The Ford Figo also comes equipped with driver-assist technologies like Hill Launch Assist – a feature that holds the vehicle for up to three seconds as the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the accelerator.
During sudden manoeuvres, the Electronic Stability Program keeps the driver in command, braking individual wheels as needed to keep the vehicle on course. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) also helps drivers to stay in control, preventing wheel lockup and maintaining stability while braking.
To encourage responsible driving, the new Ford Figo features Ford’s MyKey technology. MyKey lets the owner program keys with restricted driving modes that encourage good habits, such as increasing seat belt use, limiting vehicle top speeds and regulating audio volume.
Kudos to engineers at Ford for delivering an array of safety features in the new Figo.
Ford Figo 2015 - Verdict
The new Ford Figo is the company’s vision for a practical all-new global small car offering advanced technology and clever design to important markets around the world at an affordable and competitive price.
Through the design language, Ford is attempting to communicate efficiency and precision. Its bold, elongated headlamps and a long, lean look with sweeping, curved lines create a sense of movement. The front end of the new Ford Figo has been designed keeping the company’s new global look in mind, and the buff front end with the bold grille and sleek headlamps looks especially appealing.
Able to seat five comfortably, the new Ford Figo is equipped with technology usually found in larger cars. Say for example the MyFord Dock which enables occupants to store, mount and charge mobile devices such as phones and satellite navigation systems; or the SYNC with Voice Control and AppLink enables drivers to activate apps, play music and make phone calls, while keeping both hands on the wheel are very useful and segment-first features.
With an introductory price of Rs 4.3 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the new Ford Figo represents great value proposition by offering an intelligent blend of looks, practicality, technology, safety and fuel efficiency and should pose as a formidable contender to the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Hyundai Grand i10.
