Mercedes-Benz launched the CLA-Class in India with prices starting price from Rs 31.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Mercedes-Benz’s entry-level sedan - the CLA-Class, will clash head on with the Audi A3 which has met with some success since hitting the Indian market.

In India, Mercedes-Benz is offering the CLA-Class sedan with two engines - a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel. While the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged petrol unit churns out a maximum power output of 184 PS and 300Nm of peak torque, the diesel unit - 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder unit is good for 137 PS and 300Nm.

The CLA will enter the Mercedes-Benz line-up beneath the C-class and above corresponding A-class and B-Class models and will compete with the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is the third model to be based on Mercedes-Benz's new modular front-wheel-drive platform. It follows on from the second-generation B-class and third-generation A-class, with which it shares its mechanical package, electric architecture and interior appointments.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is 4630mm long, 1777mm wide and stands 1437mm tall. The chassis of the CLA features a MacPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension, featuring three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are virtually independent of one another. A CLA-specific feature is the flexible decoupling of the rear axle carrier, which benefits ride comfort. Wheel carriers and spring links consist of aluminum, in order to reduce the unsprung masses. Two chassis and suspension set-ups are available: the comfort suspension and the sports suspension for sporty yet comfortable handling. The latter entails lowering of the body by 20 mm (front) and 15 mm (rear).

Mercedes-Benz has packed the CLA with a slew of safety features. Standard-fit systems include drowsiness-detecting Attention Assist and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist that helps to boost braking from a speed of 4mph to avoid or reduce the severity of impacts. Optional safety systems include Distronic Plus, which complements Collision Prevention Assist and is engineered to provide autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124mph. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 19 mph and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.

Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented, “With many segment benchmarks, we are convinced that the CLA will firmly make its mark in India. Its powerful design underscores the sporty side of the Mercedes-Benz brand. The CLA remains true to Mercedes-Benz's core values by setting new standards in aerodynamics and efficiency, yet carves out a niche with its thrilling design and cutting-edge technology. The CLA-Class is stylish, sporty and distinctive and one of the most beautifully designed products from the Mercedes-Benz portfolio. The CLA-Class has been a global success winning new customers for Mercedes-Benz and we aim to replicate this success in India.”
“With a stylish design language and impeccable performance, the CLA will surely capture the imagination of the discerning Indian consumer, who wants to look distinctive and make a definitive style statement. We have incorporated India specific changes to the car making it even more adept for the Indian conditions. With this, the CLA delivers the level of refinement and performance expected of a Mercedes-Benz. The CLA-Class which is a perfect blend of style, sporty drive and luxurious features, becomes an even more attractive choice for buyers with its unique value propositions. The specially designed service and finance packages make buying and owning the CLA a pure delight,” Kern further added.
