new skoda yeti india launch

Pawel Szuflak, Director Sales and Marketing, with Sudhi Rao, MD - Skoda India at the new Yeti launch.

Skoda India has launched the face-lifted Yeti today in two variants, beginning at a price of Rs 18.63 lakh for the front-wheel drive version and Rs 20.14 lakh for the 4x4.

The most significant change to the Yeti is in the way it looks, with sharper, more angular headlamps, the new Skoda corporate grille and logo, and a refreshed front bumper. The new Yeti will be available in 7 colours, which includes Black, White, Blue, Brown, Orange, Red and Silver.

Skoda has taken a call to offer both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions of the Yetti in a single trim variant – Elegance. Apparently, post the launch of the new Octavia sedan last year, customers opted overwhelmingly for the Elegance variant, and the customer clinics Skoda India conducted prior to the Yeti launch indicated the same.

So, the main difference between the two versions is primarily down to the powertrain. The Yeti 4x2 has a 2-litre 110 PS diesel engine, 5-speed manual gearbox and is front wheel drive only.

The Yeti 4x4 has the same 2.0-litre diesel engine, but in a higher state of tune, pumping out 140 PS and 320 Nm. It has a 6-speed manual gearbox and real-time four-wheel drive. A Haldex system apportions the torque to either axle depending on the traction available. The Yeti 4x4 does not have a low-range transfer gearbox, although it does have an electronic diff lock.

Despite the different drivetrains, there’s not much to choose between the two Yetis in terms of mileage, with the 4x2 recording 17.72 km/l and the 4x4 managing just a shade less at 17.67 km/l.

Safety features are to a very high specification on the Yeti, and it gets 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and BA, traction control, electronic stability control, cornering lamps etc.

The Yeti remains firmly part of Skoda’s range, and the face-lift might enjoy better success in the market this time around. Skoda India MD Sudhir Rao was quick to point out that there are next to no second-hand Yetis in the market, which is an indication about how much customers love their cars. “We want to continue to deliver ‘Value Luxury’ to our customers,” says Rao.
