The new Tata Zest has been launched at an introductory price of Rs 4.64 lakh for the petrol, with the base diesel variant costing a lakh of rupees more. The new Zest goes on sale immediately at over 470 Tata dealers across the country.

Powering the Zest are a pair of extremely modern drivetrains. The petrol Zest has a turbocharged 1.2-litre motor, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The diesel Zest is available with an automated manual transmission, or AMT. Both the turbo-petrol engine and the AMT gearbox are segment-firsts in the compact sedan market. Air conditioning, power steering and 15-inch alloy wheels are also standard throughout the Zest model range.

The new Tata Zest is available in a total of 9 variants – 4 petrol and 5 diesel.

Tata Zest Petrol:

XE Rs 4.64 lakh

XM Rs 5.2 lakh

XMS* Rs 5.43 lakh

XT Rs 5.99 lakh

Tata Zest Diesel

XE Rs 5.64 lakh

XM Rs 6.27 lakh

XMS* Rs 6.45 lakh

XMA Rs 6.99 lakh

XT Rs 6.99 lakh

*(Safety, with dual airbags)

Apart from the base XE grade, even the mid-spec XM grade comes with features such as a high-end HARMAN infotainment system with 8 speakers, Bluetooth connectivity and steering-mounted audio controls, and with ABS as standard. The XMS variant is the ‘safety’ grade, and includes two front airbags and ELR seatbelts. The top-of the line XT grade adds rear parking sensors, a rear defogger, an even more premium HARMAN system with touchscreen control, and has two airbags and ELR seatbelts as standard.

The XMA automated gearbox variant, available only in a single trim for now, does not have airbags.

Tata has also rolled out a new ‘333’ initiative, which promises comprehensive warranty for 3 years / 1 lakh kilometres, free service for 3 years / 45,000 kilometres and 24-hour roadside assistance. This 333 package is being offered at no cost for now.

Tata Motors also wants to improve the ownership experience with the new Zest, and the job cards will be digitized versions which will be created on a tablet device, emailed to the customer immediately. There will also be timely service reminders being sent to customers, and if they so like, customers can actually sit and watch their car being serviced.

Given the pricing and the features on offer, it is clear that Tata is playing the value card with the new Zest. In fact, the Zest even gives the likes of market value champion Hyundai a run for its money. Company bosses are mum on sales expectations, but the Zest has all it takes to be a success. Now it is for the consumer to decide.
