audi A3 launch in india

(L-R) Joe Kind, Head - Audi India with Markus Gleitz, Designer at Audi AG. The "Next Big Audi" doesn't seem to need a celebrity endorsement.

Audi India has launched the new A3 sedan in India, with prices for the base diesel variant starting at just Rs 22.95 lakh. Billed as “The Next Big Audi”, the A3 marks the brand’s push into the premium segment of the mark. The new A3 was adjudged the “World Car of the Year” by the WCOTY jury for 2014.

“Premium” and “Luxury” are oft misused terms, but clearly, the A3 is part of Audi’s Premium range in India. In fact, it is the cheapest car that Audi sells in the country, with starting prices even less than the Q3 S. The key competition to the A3 is in the form of BMW’s 1 Series, and the Mercedes-Benz duo A-Class and B-Class. However, while the three cars mentioned above are firmly hatchbacks, Audi is trying to steal a march over the competition with a proper 3-box sedan.

The A3 in India will be offered with a choice of two engines, one each in petrol and diesel. The diesel will be available in a total of 4 variants, while the petrol will be a single variant only. These are:

Audi A3 Diesel:
Attraction 35 TDI  Rs 22.95 lakh
Premium 35 TDI  Rs 25.95 lakh
Premium Plus 35  Rs TDI 29.95 lakh
Technology 35 TDI  Rs 32.66 lakh

Audi A3 Petrol
40 TFSI Rs 28.95 lakh

These are ex-showroom prices for Delhi.

The Audi A3 will be manufactured at the VW Group’s Aurangabad facility, which also manufactures the new Skoda Octavia. The Octavia and the A3 share the same Group architecture, known internally as the “MQB” platform.
The diesel A3 has a 2.0-litre engine, producing 143 PS, while the petrol A3 has a 1.8-litre engine. With a claimed acceleration time of just 7.3 seconds from 0-100 km/h, the A3 petrol promises to be a driver’s delight. The diesel A3 however, will account for the bulk of sales, and with an ARAI-certified mileage of 20.38 km/l, one can see why.

Last year, Audi had sold more than 10,000 units in the calendar year 2013. With the introduction of the new A3, Audi is looking to add significantly to this figure. For now, the Audi A3 has everything it needs to rule the roost in the Premium sedan segment, until the introduction of the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA, that is.
