Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has launched the much awaited Quanto compact UV last week at the price point of Rs 6.23 lakh (ex-showroom Kolkata) for the base C2 variant. The name 'Quanto' is a derivative of the word 'Quantum'. The Quanto name has been chosen by Mahindra to associate the new vehicle with qualities like maximum space, seats, power and performance. Based on the Ingenio platform which it already shares with the Xylo, the Quanto measures less than 4 metres overall in length, meaning it will qualify for an excise benefit. Yet, the company claims that the Quanto is "spacious enough to swallow a hatchback".
The Quanto will be available in four trim levels - the base C2, the mid-range C4 and C6 and the top-of-the-line C8 and in a range of six colour options – fiery black, java brown, mist silver, toreador red, rocky beige and diamond white.

Design & Engineering
The Quanto is the third vehicle from Mahindra & Mahindra based on the Ingenio platform, which was engineered from the start to spawn a range of vehicles, including the Xylo MUV and the Genio pick-up truck series. Till date, Mahindra has spent about Rs 550 crore on the Xylo, a further Rs 200 crore on the Genio, while the final investment to produce the Quanto has been to the tune of Rs 100 crore.
The Mahindra Quanto is 3985mm long, 1850mm wide and stands 1880mm tall. From the front there is very little that differentiates the Mahindra Quanto from its stable mate - the Xylo. If you look closely, then you will notice that the design line on the bonnet is better defined, and there is a new lip above the toothed grille; but these two minor characteristics apart, the Quanto and Xylo are near identical upto the rear doors.
But it is the rear of the car which has been completely reworked and helps the Quanto gain a separate identity from its road sibling. The Mahindra Xylo’s rear windows and rear bumper have been replaced by a smaller quarter glass and minimal overhang aft of the rear wheels, a result of its shortened length (3985mm as oppose to Xylo’s 4520mm).
The Quanto also gets wraparound tail lamps and comes with its spare wheel mounted on the side-opening tail-gate, which in my opinion add a positive look to the car. The Quanto C8 trim that we drove came with alloy wheels, roof rail, electric ORVMs and body coloured bumpers and door handles.
The Mahindra Quanto is powered by a 1.5 litre three cylinder mCR100 engine, which is the newest Common Rail Diesel engine in Mahindra’s SUV portfolio. The ‘m’ standing for Mahindra, ‘CR’ for common rail and ‘100’ being the output in PS. This unit is mounted longitudinally in a north-south location.
The Mahindra Quanto comes with Mahindra’s micro hybrid technology which will help in reducing fuel consumption by five per cent. This start/stop system intelligently switches off the engine when not required thus going into standby mode after few seconds of engine idling. It again springs back to life the moment you dip in the clutch. This ensures you burn less fuel and reduce emissions providing much needed relief to the environment and your wallet.
Interiors & Comfort
The Mahindra Quanto shares an identical wheelbase with the Xylo (2760mm) which results in a spacious cabin. You have to step up into the high-set cabin which will surely prove to be cumbersome for the elderly and hence defeat the purpose of it being positioned as a family vehicle. But once you have made your way inside the vehicle things start to look a little better.
The front seats are quite comfortable and the dashboard is a straight lift from the Xylo. The middle row seating too offers comfort and decent leg room. But it is the rear jump seats which qualify the Quanto as a seven-seater that were a disappointment. It is near impossible for two adults to fit in at the back unless of course you intend to physically punish someone who isn’t in your good books. We don’t even recommend it for children unless it is for a very short distance and mind you there aren’t any seat belts attached to them. Of course once you fold those jump seats, it results in you getting generous amount of luggage space (690 litre) well suited for your weekend pleasure trips.
Features like power and tilt steering and HVAC (heating, ventilation and AC) comes as standard across the model range. The top-of-the-line Quanto C8 variant that we tested came with power windows, digital drive assist system and music player with MP3, USB and auxiliary connectivity. The Quanto also has plenty of utility spaces, including five bottle holders, magazine pockets, storage space under the front seats, and a tray and cup holder for the middle row passengers.
Performance & Handling
The 1.5 litre three cylinder mCR100 engine delivers 100PS of maximum power at 3750rpm and 240Nm of peak torque between 1600-2800rpm. The engine is fitted with twin stage turbo charger and powers the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual gearbox. This engine is basically a downsized version of the 2.5 mEagle engine used in the Mahindra Xylo but packs a punch none the less.
The shortened length of the Mahindra Quanto ensures there is very little weight after the rear axle which results in better handling. The Quanto has independent suspension with double wishbone and anti-roll bar at the front and five link suspension with coil spring at the rear. It absorbed the rough and distressed patches with relative ease and handled quite neatly although there was quite a bit of body roll which perhaps is an outcome of its tall body design. The braking too wasn’t confidence inspiring and leaves much to be desired on this front.
The Mahindra Quanto boasts of an ARAI ratified mileage of 17.21 kmpl, and although real-world fuel economy will be less, however, the Quanto should easily manage over 600 km between tank fulls.
The Mahindra Quanto comes with standard safety features such as child lock on middle and rear doors and digital immobiliser. The top-of-the-line Quanto C8 trim that we tested came with additional safety features like ABS, two airbags (driver and front passenger), fog lamps and reverse parking sensors.
With the Quanto, Mahindra & Mahindra is trying to bring to the masses a more versatile and compact UV that could very well be a value-for-money proposition for the young urban Indian. The company has benchmarked the recently launched Maruti Ertiga and Renault Duster as the Quanto's most likely rivals, but at the price point at which it has been introduced, it comfortably undercuts both. Mahindra Quanto prices start at Rs 6.23 lakh in comparison to Rs 7.63 lakh for the base model Maruti Ertiga diesel, and Rs 8.13 lakh for the base version of the Renault Duster.
In fact, it might also prove to be a tempting proposition for entry-level sedan buyers, and could well poach sales from Mahindra's very own Verito sedan, Maruti’s Swift Dzire and Hyundai premium hatchback i20.
There is no denying the fact that the price point is perhaps the single largest USP of the Mahindra Quanto and the manner in which the Quanto has been packaged it turns out to be a sensible and practical choice from the Indian viewpoint and could well help Mahindra get the numbers that they are looking at.
