Renault Fluence Test Drive Report

Introduction

Hindustani is a dialect widely spoken throughout India. It is a pot-pourri of mainly Hindi and Urdu, peppered with Arabic, Sanskrit and Persian words and phrases, and lately English as well. Widely spoken in the Indian subcontinent, it is the default lingua franca in most parts of our country. Into this eclectic mix, Renault has thrown in some French flavour.

The Fluence is its first car in India, and one which will lay the foundations for the brand over here. It will compete with established players like the Toyota Corolla Altis, Honda Civic, Skoda Laura and Chevrolet Cruze. Does it have what it takes? 

Design & Engineering

The Fluence is very French when you look at it. This is a big car, boasting of the longest wheelbase in its segment, and with pronounced proportions all around. The big nose, two part grille and bulging headlamps give it striking looks which definitely draw your attention. There’s a pronounced hump over the front wheel arch, which can tend to look slightly disproportionate from some angles, especially when viewed in profile. The rear of the car is arguably its more flattering appearance. The Fluence rides on big 16-inch wheels and tall 205/60 profile tyres, which fill up the wheel arches and also contribute to its cushy ride, but more on that later.

The thick rub strips on the bottom of the doors might look a little ungainly, especially  on the white car tested here, but are very practical, preventing dents and scratches on the lower door sills which lead to rusting

Interiors & Comfort

The Fluence’s long proportions endow it with generous interior room and a big boot. Leg space in this car is superb, and the front seats are large and very comfortable. The rear seat squab is a tad too short, but the backrest angle is almost perfect. Ingress and egress is easy too with the wide-opening doors. The driver’s seat has height adjustment, useful for shorter drivers, and the tilt and telescopic steering wheel makes it easy to find a comfortable driving position.

The dashboard is a big swathe of black and grey, and although it feels very taut and well put-together, the interiors look a little drab. Soft touch plastics would have definitely given it a plusher feel. The steering wheel feels good to hold, and the analogue/digital combination instruments look distinctive, especially the yellow detailing on the tachometer.

There is some engine clatter which is quite audible at start up, but it cruises relatively quietly, with little or no vibrations filtering through to the cabin.

The controls for the audio system are a little fiddly, with small buttons which are difficult to use while on the go. The music system itself boasts some of the best sound quality of a factory-fitted stereo.

Performance & Handling

There are quite a few sceptics who question small diesel engines in D-segment cars, but the Fluence’s 1.5-litre dCi acquits itself commendably. This is an eager engine, with a strong wallop in its midrange and not too much lag. The Fluence diesel has a six-speed manual gearbox, which shifts positively, but does not like to be rushed through the gate. Clutch action is surprisingly light, and your ankle does not ache even in stop-go city traffic. This engine produces 106 PS @ 4000 rpm, and a frankly astonishing 240 Nm of torque.

Around corners, the Fluence can feel a handful given its size, but never does it feel unsafe. There’s quite a bit of body roll, and the combination of soft suspension and tall tyres mean it doesn’t quite match the precision of its distant Formula 1 cousin, but it is predictable, with no hidden demons or surprises. The steering wheel provides plenty of feedback too, and in my opinion is one of the nicer helms in this segment.

The Fluence’s ride quality will win it a lot of friends, and at a canter on the highway, it smothers most cuts and ruts on the road. Unlike other softly-sprung cars which tend to wallow, the Fluence’s damping has been well-judged, and so your passengers won’t be getting car-sick.

We tested the Fluence during some of the heaviest rain in Kolkata for years, and the roads were a lunar landscape, but the Fluence was quite simply brilliant on the emaciated macadam.

The brakes on the Fluence are superb, with very good progression and feel, and with very good stopping power. The big tyres help no doubt in this regard too.

Fuel Efficiency

The Fluence is a big car, and weighs a substantial 1250 kgs. Add to that the fact that we spent most of our time in stop-go city traffic, the Fluence managed only 9 kpl, which is disappointing. I’m sure the car would have performed better had the road conditions been better, and we could have used a higher gear. The car was brand new, and from experience we know that it takes a couple of thousand kilometres for an engine to ‘bed in’. As and when we run a Fluence for a longer period, we’ll update you on our figures

Safety

The Fluence comes with two airbags as standard, and also has ABS with EBD. The Fluence also has electronic stability programme or ESP as standard, which should prevent you from getting into trouble at all. In all, it should perform its function of keeping occupants quite safe in the unfortunate event of a crash
