Italian carmaker Fiat has showcased the premium hatchback Abarth 500 at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo held in February. The auto manufacturer which presently sells just two products in India - the Punto hatchback and the Linea sedan is gearing up to add three more products in its Indian line-up by the end of this year; one among which is slated to be the Abarth 500.

Fiat has also stated that althogh the Abarth 500 will initially be imported as a CBU, however, they plan to locally assemble the Abarth 500 at its manufacturing plant at Ranjangaon in order to ensure competitive pricing. Speaking at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, Nagesh Basavanhalli, President and Managing Director, Fiat Group Automobiles India, said, “We plan to launch Abarth 500 later this year in India. Initially we would import the car as a completely built unit (CBU) but later on we plan to locally assemble it at our Ranjangaon plant.”

The Abarth 500 is powered by a 1.4-litre, 16-valve turbocharged engine which delivers a blistering 136 PS at 5500rpm, while peak torque is 206 Nm at 3000rpm in Sport mode. Just the potent levels of performance you would expect from an Abarth car, but with surprisingly low fuel consumption, averaging 33mpg and CO2 emissions of just 155g/km. The powerplant is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox and is tuned to deliver quicker and sportier gear shifts. The Abarth 500 is a two door model with room for two adults at the front with the rear seat being best reserved only for kids or luggage.

The Abarth 500 will come loaded with an array of features like gas discharge headlights, sunroof, cross drilled brake disc, sports seats, lowered suspension with up-rated springs, 17-inch alloy wheels, 7 airbags, turbo boost gauge, twin exhaust outlets, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) and HBA (Hydraulic Brake Assistance), parking sensors, fog lights,  music system.

Fiat will sell Abarth cars through its independent dealerships and the Italian car manufacturer might open exclusive Abarth dealerships later depending on customer response. In India, the Abarth 500 will take on the likes of the New Volkswagen Beetle, Mercedes-Benz A-Class, BMW 1 Series and Mini Cooper in a very niche segment.
