audi a3 cabriolet india launch

WHEN: 11 December 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 30 - 35 lakh

ENGINES: 1.8-litre TSI petrol, 182 PS, 250 Nm / 2.0 TDI diesel, 140 PS, 320 Nm

COMPETITION: None really.

Audi will take the next step towards building the brand’s sex appeal with the launch of the new A3 Cabriolet. As the name suggests, it is the convertible version of the A3 premium sedan, with a folding fabric roof.

The reason anyone will want to buy this car is or the obvious pleasures of top-down motoring, the wind-in-your-hair feeling, the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside on a road trip. I suspect there will be many who will drive it around town, more to be seen in, too, but that is something that Audi India will want to capitalize on.

Mechanically, the A3 Cabriolet is almost identical to its saloon brother. Of course, it is slightly heavier because of the additional strengthening required in the floor and the sills, but dynamically, it should still prove reasonably exciting to drive. The A3 Cabriolet, like the A3 sedan and the Skoda Octavia, is built on the VW Group’s new MQB platform.

Powertrain options on the new A3 Cabriolet will include the familiar 2.0-litre TDI diesel and 1.8 TSI petrol engines, same as in the A3 sedan.

The cabin retains the same premium feel, and while the front half of the cabin is identical to the sedan, rear passengers will feel the pinch. Legroom and shoulder room are both quite tight, and so long periods in the rear seats might not be welcome. The boot too isn’t anywhere near as useful either; with the roof up, there’s 330 litres of luggage space, but once you’ve folded the top, there isn’t much remaining.

The new A3 Cabriolet will likely be imported in CBU form, since the expected numbers may not justify an Indian assembly operation. The new A3 Cabriolet gives Audi India a completely different product with which to take on the competition. As we’ve seen lately, there have been a lot of new products in the premium, entry-luxury market, and Audi India recognizes the need to have a slew of products competing for the Indian customers’ mind space.

For sex appeal at an affordable price, the A3 Cabriolet might just be it.
