new bmw 5 series

WHEN: October 10, 2013

HOW MUCH: Rs 40 - 56 lakh

ENGINES: 2.0-litre diesel (520d), 3.0-litre diesel (525d), 3.0-litre diesel (530d), 2.5-litre petrol (523i), 3.0-litre petrol (535i)

COMPETITION: Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Jaguar XF

BMW India will launch a refreshed version of its 5 Series saloon in the country on October 10. The “new” 5 Series, if you can call it that, gets a few minor tweaks to the exterior styling, and adds a couple of convenience features to make it better value.

The biggest discernible visual difference is to the treatment of the front bumper and air dam. BMW has added chrome detailing to the fog light surround, which is reminiscent of a paper clip. It’s quite a striking and unique design feature. There are minor tweaks to the front headlights and trademark kidney grille as well, but these are so subtle that you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference if one whizzed by. Similarly, the tail lamps too receive subtle tweaks. There are no changes to any of the sheet metal though.

Inside the refreshed 5 Series, BMW is likely to offer Indian customers a few more upholstery and trim options, to increase the level of customisation on offer. One big improvement though is the addition of a track pad or touchpad to the top of BMW’s iDrive controller, which makes it easier and more intuitive to use, according to the company. We are yet to try it, but are keen to see how much of an improvement it is over the current system, which can be a little confusing at times.

New alloy wheel designs will be offered; iDrive controller now has touchpad on top.

One key convenience feature that BMW has added to the new 5 Series is a motion sensing boot release; simply swipe your foot under the bumper, and the boot id will magically open. Of course, you need to have the smart key on your person for this feature to be functional. It no doubt adds immensely to the convenience of loading the boot, when you have an armful of shopping bags for example. However, most Indian customers of the new BMW 5 Series are likely to be chauffeur-driven, and may not extract the maximum utility of such a feature.

BMW in all likelihood will persist with its range of powertrain offerings, which include three diesel and two petrol engine options. The stalwart of the range of course remains the 520d diesel, which remains the only four-cylinder engine in the line-up, with the 525d, 530d, 523i and 530i all sporting in-line 6-cylinder engines. However, given that Mercedes has recently rationalised its range on the revised E-Class, BMW India may be tempted to pursue a similar strategy. Of course, we’ll only know on October 10, whence the car is officially launched.

Expect a price revision upwards, given the depreciating rupee, which means the kits the new 5 Series is assembled from have become dearer.
