new bmw x4

WHEN: Early 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 45 - 50 lakh

ENGINES: 2.0-litre 185 PS diesel, 3.0-litre 260 PS diesel,

COMPETITION: Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK

We always knew it was coming, and now it’s been confirmed; BMW will build an all-new sports activity vehicle, the new BMW X4, from later this year. The company has revealed the images and dimensions of the new X4 ahead of the car’s debut at the Shanghai Motor Show later this month.

The new BMW X4 is based on the X3 platform, and shares the same 2,810 mm wheelbase. However, the concept is the same as the larger, X5-based BMW X6. It sports a tapering coupe-like roofline, and four individual seats. All-time four-wheel drive, dubbed xDrive, is standard, as is substantial ground clearance. However, the BMW X4 is not intended as an off-roader; instead, it is a stylish, road-biased car with sporty dynamics and cool coupe styling.

The original X6, which debuted four years ago, received bouquets and brickbats in equal measure, but went on to become a strong seller around the globe, with BMW registering sales of more than 50,000 units annually. BMW’s X Series range, which comprises the X1, X3, X5 and X6 today accounts for over a fourth of the company’s total sales. With the new X4, BMW will obviously be looking to add to this tally.

The new X4 measures 4,648 mm in length, which is a substantial 227 mm shorter than the bigger X6. However, it will still look imposing on the road. Four individual seats are offered as standard, with a centre console dividing the two independent rear seats, although BMW could offer a bench seat at the rear if customers demand it.

The rest of the interiors, including the dashboard, seats and steering wheel etc are likely to be sourced from the same parts bin as the X3. This is for obvious cost rationalisation, but it is likely that BMW will offer different colours and textures to differentiate the two.

Powertrains will also be likely sourced from the X3, which would mean the 2.0-litre 185 PS diesel and 3.0-litre 260 PS diesel will most likely be offered from launch. For other markets, especially the USA, Middle East and China, BMW will likely offer four- and six-cylinder petrol engines as well. Eightspeed automatic transmission, or six-speed manuals will be offered in all markets, but India is likely to get the auto only.

Although it isn’t confirmed just yet, BMW is likely to look at assembling the X4 at its Chennai facility. This would make sense because the Indian market laps up luxury SUVs, and BMW would love another product in its line-up to help it compete with Audi and Mercedes. Audi especially is enjoying somewhat of an unchallenged hegemony of the luxury SUV market in India, and it stands to reason that BMW would want to target this. Prices in India are likely to start around the Rs 45 lakh mark, as and when the new BMW X4 comes to market, which is a slight premium compard to the more conventional X3.
