WHEN: March-April 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 70-90 lakh

ENGINES: 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder in-line diesel unit and 4.4-litre petrol

COMPETITION: Mercedes-Benz M-Class, Audi Q7, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, Land Rover Discovery4

BMW has unveiled the third generation X5 SUV. the new X5 is slightly bigger, but greener into the bargain. BMW will uniquely offer a rear-wheel drive only version as well. The new X5 will be assembled from CKD kits at BMW India's Chennai facility.

The new BMW X5 will be offered with three engines options at launch - BMW X5 xDrive50i with a new generation of the V8 petrol engine (456PS), BMW X5 xDrive30d with revised six-cylinder in-line diesel unit (262PS) and the BMW X5 M50d M Performance Automobile with tri-turbo six-cylinder in-line diesel (386PS).

BMW-X5-Side

Two more diesels – including a fuel-efficient four-cylinder – are expected to join the range by the end of the year. A rear-wheel-drive version of the four-cylinder diesel will be sold alongside the 4x4.

Changes to the exterior are subtle, however, BMW will introduce two design packages - Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence - as alternatives to the styling of the standard SE and M Sport specifications. Customers will now be able to order either the complete packages, individual parts or mix and match between the two.

In the inside, the new X5 promises improved space and greater practicality. The middle row of seats splits 40:20:40, and X5 boasts of a 650 litres (30 litres more than the current X5) of luggage space with the seats upright. If you require more storage space, all you need to do is to fold the middle row of seats away and what you get is a mammoth 1870 litres of luggage space, an improvement of 120 litres. A third row of seats, which folds into the boot floor when not needed comes as optional.

BMW-X5-Interior

BMW claims to have tuned the engine for lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency, however, the company promises that the driving experience will remain uncompromised.

All the variants of the new BMW X5 will come with a Drive Dynamic Control switch, which allows the driver to fine-tune the responses of the throttle, transmission and steering. On cars fitted with adaptive suspension, the Drive Dynamic Control also alters the damping and roll stabilisation settings.

Many new or improved electronic driver aids will also be available. For example, the new Driving Assistant includes lane departure warning and a pedestrian and collision warning system, which alerts the driver to a potential accident, primes the brakes, and applies them automatically if necessary at speeds of up to 55kmph. The Dynamic Safety tightens seatbelts, adjusts the front passenger seat and closes windows in an accident, while the Attention Assistant warns the driver if any sign of fatigue is detected.

BMW-X5-Rear

The BMW X5 was introduced in the German car manufacturer’s product portfolio in 1999 and has since sold over 1.3 million units worldwide. The new X5 will continue to be produced at the company’s US production line in Spartanburg, South Carolina, which is also home to the X3 and X6.
