new chevrolet adra

WHEN: Jan 2015

HOW MUCH: Rs 5.5 lakh

ENGINE: 1.3-litre diesel

COMPETITION: Ford EcoSport, Fiat Avventura, Toyota Etios Cross

The Chevrolet Adra is a new compact SUV from General Motors, designed at GM India's Technical Design Centre in Bangalore. The Chevrolet Adra may be a concept, but it is not too far away from production reality. The new Adra will form a direct competitor to the likes of the Ford EcoSport, and to an extent to the new genre of crossovers like the Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura. The Adra will likely be offered with diesel power alone to begin with. Expect a market introduction as early as 2015.

Chevrolet already builds the Trax compact SUV, which is sold in Europe, but this vehicle is almost 4.2 metres long, making it ineligible for the excise benefits that sub-4-metre cars in India enjoy. However, GM India acknowledges that for it to remain relevant in the Indian car market, a small SUV or crossover is imperative. Hence, it has taken the bold decision to design and build this new car, called the Adra.

The Adra takes some popular Chevy design cues, like the two-part front grille, but has interpreted it in a completely new way. The blacked-out A- and B-pillars and the blacked out roof are design cues which may make it to production. Chevrolet may even offer customers the option of more than one contrast roof colour.

The new Adra SUV will receive motive power from the tried-and-tested Multijet diesel engine, which is jointly developed with Fiat, and which it builds at its Talegaon facility. The Adra is based on GM’s global Gamma 2 platform, which is a front-wheel drive platform for compact cars. Expect the Adra to b front-wheel drive only, and it is unlikely that GM India will offer a four-wheel drive version.

There is no word on whether the Adra will be offered with a petrol engine, but don’t rule out the possibility. However, other than the 1.2-litre petrol motor offered in the Beat and Sail U-VA, GM India currently does not have a petrol engine in its portfolio that would meet the small car criteria and still have enough grunt to power the Adra. The 1.4-litre petrol engine offered in the Enjoy MUV might be an option, although the Adra would not receive the excise benefit with this engine.

The most obvious direct competitor that the Chevrolet Adra is targeting is the Ford EcoSport. The EcoSport has proven wildly successful in the Indian car market, and with good reason. If Chevrolet can steal some sales away from Ford, it would be more than happy. Expect GM India to try and undercut the competition on price, at least at launch, so customers can look forward to a starting price of under Rs 5.5 lakh. Bookings for the new Chevrolet Adra should commence by year-end, with the first deliveries taking place early in 2015.
