chevrolet sail may launch india

WHEN: October 2012

HOW MUCH: Rs 4 – 6 lakh

ENGINES: 1.2-litre petrol/LPG, 1.3-litre diesel

COMPETITION: Maruti Swift, Ford Figo, Maruti Ritz, VW Polo, Skoda Fabia, Hyundai i20, Nissan Micra

The new Chevrolet Sail hatchback, essentially the replacement for the current Aveo U-VA is due for market introduction by May, autojunction.in’s sources have confirmed. The Sail will be available with both petrol and diesel engines, and will be built at GM India’s Talegaon facility near Pune.

The new Chevrolet Sail, developed by General Motor’s Chinese partner SAIC and Daewoo, has been engineered to be cheap and reliable and easy to build. Since much of the development has been undertaken in China and Korea, costs have been optimised to a great extent, which should allow GM to price the car very competitively. autojunction.in understands that GM is keen to push the value envelope with the Sail, and has keenly studied how Ford localised the Figo to offer a Supermini-sized car at a Subcompact price point. It’s possible that Chevrolet would look at a very competitive entry price, and at launch don’t be surprised to see the base version starting at less than Rs 4 lakh.

The new Sail will be available with both petrol and diesel engines, mated to a five speed manual gearbox. The Sail’s petrol engine will be essentially a reworked version of the S-TEC II motor that powers the Beat. The diesel will be the popular 1.3-litre Fiat Multijet engine, which GM will produce under license at its new engine facility at Talegaon. Otherwise mechanically, the Sail sticks to the small car template of McPherson struts for the front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle. GM has good experience tuning cars for Asia, so expect the Sail to boast decent ride quality.
