WHEN: Not certain

HOW MUCH: Rs 8 – 11 lakh

ENGINES: 1.4-litre turbo petrol, 1.3-litre turbo diesel, 1.7-litre turbo diesel

COMPETITION: Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Volkswagen Vento

Having launched three products in the last 12 months, Chevrolet is now looking forward to introduce more products in the Indian line up. Chevrolet is allured by the premium mid-size sedan segment which according to the car maker holds a lot of promise. Presently, Chevrolet doesn’t have a product to compete in this segment. There is a rather big gap that exists in their sedan line-up in India between their entry-level Sail sedan and the executive Cruze sedan. Chevrolet aims to target this segment, currently dominated by Hyundai’s Verna, with its Sonic sedan.

The Sonic is essentially Chevrolet’s replacement for the Aveo sedan which GM India has quietly axed from its model line-up in India. It’s anybody’s guess that the Aveo was never a hot-seller and struggled to make its mark. However, the new Sonic is a completely new car and a much nicer looking replacement for the mediocre looking Aveo. The double stacked grille and bold headlamps are striking, and the Sonic is perhaps the only car in the mid-size segment which could probably give the Hyundai Verna a run for its money with its style quotient.

The Chevolet Sonic sedan shares its petrol engine with the Trax, which will provide economies of scale for General Motors if they decide to build both the cars in India. As for a diesel powertrain, the Sonic could be available with either the 1.7-litre turbo-diesel from the Sonic or the 1.3-litre turbo diesel which is seen in the smaller and cheaper Sail sedan, but with a higher power output.

There’s still a substantial market for sedans in India, and Chevrolet is keen to return to this segment. Prices are speculative at present but with the Sonic, Chevrolet is aiming for a strategy similar to what Hyundai has with the Verna, offering multiple variants across a broad price range. The range is expected to span between Rs 8 – 11 lakh, ex-showroom, when the car goes on sale in the country.
