The resurrected Datsun brand will launch its first product – a hatchback called Go – in the first quarter of 2014. The Datsun Go will initially be sold in India only, although there are plans to export it to other countries in Asia subsequently.

The Datsun Go is engineered on a reworked version of the Datsun B-platform, which was used on the previous-generation Micra hatchback.

Nissan had announced its plans to bring back the Datsun brand last year. Datsun is intended as the low-cost arm of Nissan, and will launch low-cost high-value products in emerging markets, including the BRIC countries and some other markets in Asia and Latin America.

Three products are planned for Datsun, of which the Go hatchback is the first product. The other two are a low-cost sedan which will be built in Russia, and a cheaper MPV for the Indonesian market. Over time all three products will be offered in various other markets. By FY 2017, all three Datsun products will be on sale in India.

The Datsun Go does feature certain innovations on the inside which are surely to appeal to Indian car buyers. The Go is positioned as the first choice for first-time car buyers, and Nissan/Datsun new they had to do something different with the car. The dashboard layout is quite innovative, as you can see from these pictures. The gear lever is mounted almost on the centre console, while the handbrake is a pull-type unit located just below the steering wheel, similar to the layout seen on some older utility vehicles. This has liberated more space in the middle, allowing Datsun designers to create a bench-type seating layout. However, the company is categorical that only two seatbelts are provided in the front, and the extra upholstering is not intended for a third passenger. Things being as they are in India, don't be too surprised to find three people sitting abreast at front.

As far as the powertrain of the Go is concerned, it will sport a derivative of the HR12 three-cylinder petrol engine found in the new Micra and Micra Active, mated to a five-speed gearbox driving the front wheels. We don't have any ratings for the engine, although it's likely that it will be tuned similarly to what we see in the Micra Active, with the focus being more on fuel efficiency than outright power.

Nissan expects to position the Datsun Go below the Micra Active which it launched recently, with prices starting below the Rs 3 lakh mark. There is the expectation that a base Datsun Go, without AC or power steering, might also be offered at a price below Rs 2.5 lakh. Such pricing will allow Nissan to really take the fight to Hyundai and Maruti, with the Go competing with the likes of the Alto K10 and the Hyundai Eon.
