new fiat punto evo

Fighting talk aside, Fiat is slowly but surely clawing its way back in the Indian market. New product introductions are needed however, and that’s where the Punto Evo comes in. The new Fiat Punto Evo jumps wheels first into India’s cut-throat premium hatchback segment.

Of course, this overcrowded part of the market is still dominated by the Maruti Swift and the Hyundai i20, but Fiat wants to make its presence felt. Which the stylish Punto Evo is sure to do.

It’s not often that a production road car can pull of the details with elan and panache, the way Fiat seems to have managed with the Punto Evo. Starting with what was already a very well penned design, the company’s designers have further augmented the details to make this one very good looking car indeed. The simple creases along the side and the bonnet and the flared wheel arches contrast perfectly with its delicately rounded profile. The only slightly fussy element is the front grille, but that too grows on you.

Inside, the Punto Evo boasts of the same new dashboard as already found in the recently launched new Linea sedan. Both black-and-grey and black-and-beige interiors will likely be offered. We hope Fiat India sells the Punto Evo in this country with the lovely sports steering wheel pictured here. The raised stitching and slightly flat-bottomed steering wheel are the kind of subtle detailing which has always set Fiat apart.

Under the hood you can expect the tried and trusted Multijet diesel to soldier on. Both 75 PS and 90 PS variants will likely be offered. The transmission may receive a slightly taller final drive ratio, to make the cruising experience slightly less buzzing and to improve fuel economy.

The naturally aspirated 1.4-litre petrol motor will also be offered with the new Punto Evo, as will the anaemic and wheezy 1.2 FIRE, but that’s more to do with a low asking price. We can only hope Fiat listens to enthusiasts and sells the Punto Evo with the 1.4 T-Jet petrol too.

Sales of the new Punto Evo are expected to commence around Diwali, a few weeks before the abarth 500 goes on sale. Fiat India is still evaluating whether to sell both the present Punto and the Punto Evo, or whether to scrap the Punto entirely. Company insiders have indicated that there isn’t a clear business case supporting either argument, so time will tell which way Fiat plays its cards.

Now that's what you call a shapely behind.

All told, the new Fiat Punto Evo could be a success story for the company, relatively speaking. I may not enjoy the kind of market response that the Swift and i20 do, but then “sex-appeal” has never been a shopping criterion for the average Indian car buyer in any case. Which is sad, because the Punto Evo should do everything else well too.

Prices are expected to start just under Rs 5 lakh for the 1.2 petrol version, going up to Rs 8 lakh for the diesel Emotion variant.
