Ford-Ka-Concept

WHEN: End 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 4 – 7 lakh

ENGINES: 1.0-litre petrol, 1.4-litre diesel

COMPETITION: Hyundai Grand i10, Honda Brio, Chevrolet Beat

American car maker Ford has revealed the Ka Concept earlier this month. The Ka is the company’s vision for a practical all-new global small car offering advanced technology and clever design to important markets around the world at an affordable and competitive price. The new Ka small car is expected to go on sale towards the end of 2014 in markets around the globe.

Through Ka’s design language, Ford is attempting to communicate efficiency and precision. Its bold, elongated headlamps and a long, lean look with sweeping, curved lines create a sense of movement.

The front end of the Ford Ka has been designed keeping the company’s new global look in mind, and the buff front end with the bold grille and sleek headlamps looks especially appealing.

Ford has sold more than 1.8 million Ka cars since the vehicle was first launched in 1996 and the company projects that worldwide the small car segment will increase by 35 per cent from 4 million units in 2012 to 6.2 million units by 2017.

Able to seat five comfortably, the Ka Concept is equipped with technology usually found in larger cars. Say for example the MyFord Dock which enables occupants to store, mount and charge mobile devices such as phones and satellite navigation systems; or the SYNC with Voice Control and AppLink enables drivers to activate apps, play music and make phone calls, while keeping both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road are some of the applications and technology which will be found in the Ford Ka.

Stephen Odell, Executive Vice President, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Ford, said, “The Ka Concept builds on Ford’s small car expertise and success to offer the design and technology customers worldwide will be looking for over the coming years. Consumers increasingly expect to seamlessly transfer their mobile devices from home, to car, to workplace, and the Ka Concept shows how technology enabling them to do just that, will be extended to an attainable small car.”

The new Ka will be powered by a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, producing about 75PS. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo-petrol could also potentially be used for some markets, notably more evolved markets like Europe. A diesel version cannot be ruled out either, although there are no clues as yet about the specification of such an engine.

It is also likely that the Ford Ka will be produced in India for export markets around the world as well. It could possibly replace the present Figo, and in fact would make the perfect foil to the new Datsun Go and Hyundai Grand i10. Ford’s new plant in Gujarat is likely to be operational in 2014, and the new Ka could be the kick-off model for this facility.

Ford is also working on a sedan version of the Ka concept, but whether it will be a small notchback conforming to the 4-metre overall length rule, like the Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze, or a bigger car, is yet unclear. What is certain is that such a car will indeed be built, and in fact might even revive the "Ikon" nameplate. The original Ikon, or the Josh Machine as it was also popularly known, helped to build the Ford brand in India, and is a name that carries strong recall.
