new honda accord

WHEN: Mid-2015

HOW MUCH: Rs 22 - 30 lakh

ENGINES: 2.0-litre petrol, 2.44-litre petrol, 3.5-litre V6 petrol

COMPETITION: Skoda Superb, Toyota Camry, Hyundai Sonata, Volkswagen Passat

Honda may have discontinued sales of the current generation Accord and the Civic, but the premium sedan market still holds allure for Indian car buyers. To satisfy the demand in the market, Honda is lining up the next generation Accord for an India launch in 2015.

The new Accord is actually a little smaller in size as compared to the outgoing car. It measures 2,775 mm between the axles, which is 25 mm less than before and is almost 80 mm shorter in length. However, Honda claims to have eked out even more space inside the cabin, which is believable given the company’s “Man Maximum, Machine Minimum” mantra.

From these pictures, you can see that Honda has gone down the conservative route in styling the new Accord. In fact, the US and European Accords look completely different, and the pictures here are of the US-market Accord.

Under the skin, there’s been a major change. Honda has ditched the dual wishbone front suspension in favour of a more conventional McPherson strut set-up. This suspension architecture is not only more compact, but it saves weight too. Honda claims the new Accord is 15.2 kgs lighter at each corner as a result. It also says that driving feel and involvement has not been compromised in any way. Until we get behind the wheel we won’t be able to verify this unfortunately.

The claimed kerb weight for the new Accord 2.4 is now 1476 kgs, which is 24 kgs lighter than before. Similarly, the new Accord V6 is 21 kgs lighter than its predecessor.

The engine range has been overhauled as well. There are three petrol engines on offer, two of which Indian customers are familiar with. These include a 2.4-litre I4 petrol, and a 3.5-litre V6 petrol. There’s also a 2.0-litre I4, which will be new to Indian buyers, which Honda may consider introducing in our market. Power and torque outputs are as follows:

2.0 I4: 155 PS / 190 Nm

2.4 I4: 185 PS / 245 Nm

3.5 V6: 278 PS / 342 Nm

While these engines appear familiar at first glance, Honda claims they have been reworked to make them more fuel efficient and drivable too. Honda now offers a CVT gearbox with the 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre in some markets, while the standard option is a new 6-speed manual. The 3.5-lt V6 is offered with a new 6-speed automatic transmission as standard. For the Indian market however, we can take clues on the powertrain options from what’s offered in the new CR-V, which includes the 2.0-litre and 2.44-litre petrol engines.

There are no plans for an Accord diesel for now, although such a model does exist for European markets. However, Honda’s Indian engineers claim that our fuel quality does not permit the diesel Accord or CR-V to be even considered for our market, which is a shame, really.

Although Honda did showcase the Accord Hybrid at the Auto Expo in 2014, Honda has no plans to launch the hybrid version in India for now.

The new Accord will go on sale in India sometime towards the second half of 2015. It may be assembled in India, which will allow Honda to price it competitively against the likes of the Toyota Camry, Skoda Superb and the upcoming new VW Passat.
