While addressing a gathering of journalists in Mumbai last December, Mike Manley, CEO of Jeep brand worldwide and President of Fiat Chrysler Asia-Pacific had deliberated on the group’s plans for India over the next 4 years.

Manley was clear about how an important car market like India – which is the third-largest in Asia-Pacific and the fifth-largest car market globally – could not be ignored.

Manley had also announced that in 2013, the Jeep brand will enter India, with two of their key products - the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee luxury SUV. Both these vehicles will be fully-imported into the country.

The Jeep Wrangler is a compact four-wheel drive sport utility vehicle (SUV) and an off-road machine manufactured by American automaker Chrysler, under its Jeep marque.

These vehicles were designed to traverse across country roads turned to mush by a variety of tracked vehicles and battle tanks during World War II. Owning to its jaw dropping off-roading capabilities, it soon won many hearts the world over. The craze spread to Indian shores as well. So much so that for many decades, any off-roading vehicle spotted in India was referred to as a ‘jeep’ by the common man just as photocopy is widely known as Xerox in this country.

The Jeep Wrangler boasts of a tough body-on-frame construction and huge tyres. The suspension set up comprises of non-independent live axle on both front and rear which is crucial for wheel articulation.

The Jeep Wrangler is powered by a 3.6 litre V6 petrol motor mated to a six-speed manual transmission. The engine is capable of producing 289PS of maximum power and 353Nm of peak torque. If our sources are anything to go by, then the Wrangler will come to India with a 200PS automatic gearbox-equipped diesel engine too.

The price is likely to be in the range of Rs 18-20 lakh and the Wrangler will compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. The Jeep Wrangler is likely to be fully imported as a CBU to begin with, but assembly plans are definitely on the cards. The price may be similar to other premium and luxury brands, but the Wrangler is no soft-roader. It is first and foremost a blue-blooded SUV, meant for those who will spend more time off the road than on it.
