land rover freelander 2

Land Rover will introduce the face-lifted Freelander 2 into the Indian market in the first half of 2013, it has been confirmed. The ‘new’ Freelander 2 has new headlamps, taillights and an updated interior, which are in response to extensive customer feedback, says the company.

He Freelander 2 has enjoyed strong sales success, even exceeding Land Rover’s own expectations in many markets. In fact, the company says that some customers are opting for the Freelander 2 over the Range Rover Evoque given its greater interior space. However, the interiors were a particular area of concern for some customers, and it is in response to this feedback that the company has sought to revise the Freelander 2 ahead of a completely new model due in end-2014.

To begin with, the new Freelander 2 gets revised headlights with xenon projector lamps and a string of LED daytime running lights, while at the rear, the tail lights too now use LED technology, arranged in a distinctive figure-of-8 pattern. There are no sheet metal changes however, and only the staunchest Land Rover aficionados will spot the changes at a glance.

The interiors have received particular attention, with a new, simplified Terrain Response system and an electronic parking brake which replaces the earlier lever. This has freed up some space on the centre console for an additional cubbyhole for storage.

A new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system takes pride of place on the dashboard, which can control most of the in-car systems, including the audio and navigation, while doubling up as a display for the reversing camera.

An analogue clock sits below it, an incorporation once again based upon customer feedback, according to Land Rover engineers. Three stereo options are available depending on which trim level customers opt for, which includes a standard 8-speaker unit for the entry level Freelander S. the other two units are by Meridian, and include a 380-watt, 11-speaker system in the GS and XS, while the top-of-the-range Freelander HSE and HSE Lux get an 850-watt, 17-speaker surround sound unit.

The same 2.2-litre diesel engine continues to be offered, with either 150 PS or 190 PS. A front-wheel drive variant eD4, with a 6-speed manual gearbox, is the entry-level model, but is unlikely to be offered in India. Indian customers will in all probability get only the SD4 powertrain, which includes a 6-speed automatic gearbox and Terrain Response as standard, along with Gradient control technology.

With these revisions, which to be fair are quite exhaustive, Land Rover is confident the Freelander will continue to sell strongly till the all-new model debuts in a couple of years’ time. There will be a price correction obviously, which will also take into account the weakening Indian rupee, but Land Rover India says the new Freelander 2 will still be competitive against the likes of Audi’s Q5 and the BMW X3. A market introduction in the first quarter of 2013 is likely.
