Land Rover India is gearing up to introduce the new Range Rover 4, revealed just last week, into India in the first quarter of 2013, autojunction.in can reveal. The new Range Rover 4 is Land Rover’s flagship model, and will compete with the most premium SUVs and luxury sedans in the Indian market.

In terms of its design, the new Range Rover continues with its classic and instantly-recognisable design language, with simple shapes and straight lines. Wrap-around headlights ans tail-lights are new, and lend a distinctive look to the new Range Rover 4.
The biggest change to the new Range Rover comes in the form of its construction. Given the synergies that Jaguar and Land Rover now share, much of technology used to manufacture the new Range Rover comes from Jaguar. Bonding and riveting is used extensively in the new Range Rover's largely aluminium construction, leading to a big reduction in weight and an increase in stiffness. Land Rover engineers say the new Range Rover's body shell is up to 185 kgs lighter than the steel shell of the present model.

Even the chassis sees substantial engineering trickery to make it lighter. In true Land Rover tradition, the suspension is mounted on sub-frames, which in this case feature hollow aluminium castings for lower weight. Double wishbones at front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear, again featuring aluminium, complete the structure of the Range Rover 4.

A lot of attention has been lavished on the interior as well. Range Rover is positioned as a luxury vehicle, and the new Range Rover was designed to best the likes of Mercedes S-Class and the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, which were used as benchmarks. Land rover says tyre noise and interior refinement are 'comparable', which is sure to appeal to prospective customers.

new range rover 4 off-road ability

Of course, no Land Rover can leave the factory without proper off-roading credentials, and the Range Rover 4 bests anything in this regard. Wading depth is up to a huge 900mm, while the range of wheel travel is a truly astonishing 597mm! Ground clearance is 310 mm, meaning the Range Rover 4 should be more than capable for whatever its owners throw at it.
Land Rover's trademark Terrain Response System has further evolved to include an "Auto" setting, which automatically detects the kind of surface the Range Rover is on (be it mud, grass, gravel, or snow, or sand), and automatically switches to that mode.

Evolved Terrain Response System has an "Auto" function. Sensors in the wheels and suspension compare feedback with pre-programmed algorithms to select the appropriate mode.

Power train options are carried forward, and include a 3.0-litre V6 diesel, 4.4-litre V8 diesel and 5.0-litre supercharged petrol engines. An 8-speed automatic gearbox by ZF is standard across all.
Land Rover has also developed a hybrid version, which combines a 3.0-litre diesel engine with an electric motor. The company claims the hybrid Range Rover will emit as little as 169 g of CO2 per kilometre, which is a staggering claim.

Prices will only be announced closer to the launch, but the expectation is that the new Range Rover 4 could come at slight premium over the outgoing model, given the amount of new technology on offer. However, company insiders have hinted that starting prices for the base variants will be the same as the current model.  Land Rover has been going from strength to strength over the last couple of years, and with the new Range Rover in 2013, profitability look set to improve further.
