new mini cooper s india

COMPETITION: None, really

Mini’s have a rally pedigree and a reputation as a fearsome giant-killer. The new Mini Cooper S has all the weapons necessary in its arsenal to embarrass the mightiest supercars. Here’s a look at what this tiny tyrant has to offer.

It is still staunchly front-wheel drive, of course, and utilizes humble McPherson struts up front with a multi-link rear axle. But the Mini Cooper S has variable dampers at each corner and BMW’s nifty ‘electronic differential’, which albeit not a limited-slip differential in the truest sense, achieves much the same result by applying the brakes mid-corner to keep the Mini true to its line. Mini makes a regular noise about its ‘go-kart’ handling, and if anything, the Cooper S is sharper and more aggressive than its more plebian brethren.

And then of course, there’s the engine: a BMW-sourced 2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with twin-scroll turbo, which pumps out 190 PS and whopping torque of 300 Nm. All this in a car which weighs about what you’d expect any B-segment hatch to weigh. Think Layla Ali bodyweight with Muhammad Ali punch. So quick is the little Mini, that it gets from 50 to 100 km/h faster than a Chevrolet Camaro, for example. In real-world everyday driving, it is safe to presume the new Cooper S could challenge for the title of quickest point-to-point car.

What will really appeal to Indian buyers however, is that the new Mini Cooper S can still manage 20 km/l when driven sensibly. Wow!

Abroad, the Mini Cooper S is sold with the option of a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox, but Indian buyers will likely get the automatic option only. It has paddle shifters on the steering column though, which should add to the fun factor.

We’ll get a sense of the price, and what it feels like to drive, within the next few days, but estimates suggest that the new Mini Cooper S will be priced on the naughty side of Rs 40 lakh. That’s a lot of money for what is essentially a compact hatchback. But then, few cars can carry off their racing stripes like a Mini Cooper can.
