maruti celerio suzuki a-wind new alto

WHEN: Late 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 3.75 - 5.25 lakh

ENGINES: 1.0-litre, 3-cyl petrol / 1.0-litre diesel

COMPETITION: Datsun Go, Hyundai Grand i10, Chevrolet Beat, Ford Ka

Maruti-Suzuki will display the Celerio at the 2014 Auto Expo. First shown at the Bangkok Motor Show in 2013, the A-Wind concept (codename YL7) forms the basis of Suzuki's new Alto. In India, the A-Wind will evolve into a new model, the Celerio, to replace the slow-selling A-Star and the recently discontinued Zen Estilo.

Are you confused already? Let us help clarify for you. The Maruti A-Star as currently sold in India is the international model Suzuki Alto. The A-Wind Concept is the design study for the new international Alto. However, for India, the production version of this car would be called Celerio.

The Suzuki A-Wind Concept boasts of a 2,425 mm wheelbase, which compares with 2,480 mm of the new Grand i10.

The A-Wind Concept however, is almost a full size bigger than the A-Star, and almost as big as the Maruti Ritz (or the Suzuki Splash as the Ritz is known in international markets). A quick rundown of the specifications reveals the following:

Internationally, Suzuki is considering replacing the Alto and Splash with a single model for some markets. The new Hyundai i10, which has traditionally been one of the Alto’s key competitors, especially in Europe, has grown in size over the years, and in its current avatar, is a full size larger. Suzuki understands that, and so the new Alto will be bigger, as you can see from the A-Wind’s dimensions. The market logic for India however will be different. For the Indian market, Maruti’s product line-up, in ascending order of size and price, is likely to be as below:

>  Maruti Alto 800

>  Maruti Alto K10

>  Maruti Wagon R

>  Maruti Celerio (A-Wind Concept)

>  Maruti Ritz

>  Maruti Swift

The A-Wind Concept boats of a spacious and airy cabin. Note the dash-mounted gear lever and light colours for an airier cabin ambience.

Maruti corners almost 50 % of India’s car market, and it realises that a lot has to do with its surfeit of offerings in the compact hatchback space at every price point from Rs 2.5 to Rs 7 lakh. Maruti’s product range has been ageing, and with new competitors like Datsun soon snapping at its heels, Maruti has to respond.

Rear seat space is increasingly important in all global markets, and not just India. On this front, the Suzuki A-Wind appears to deliver.

Coming back to the new Celerio, which will be developed on the A-Wind Concept, the car will feature the tried and tested small car template of McPherson struts at the front and a torsion beam rear axle. The car will be front-wheel drive only. Initially, Maruti will offer the car with the same K10B petrol engine, mated to either a 5-speed manual, or 4-speed automatic transmission. Suzuki is currently also developing its own family of diesel engines, rumoured to be in 2-cylinder, 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder configurations, featuring modular construction for maximum cost efficiency and parts rationalisation. Suzuki’s K-Series petrol engine family itself is set for an overhaul, and could feature direct injection and turbocharging in the not-to-distant future.

Test mules of the YL7 have already been spotted undergoing evaluation testing at various locations in India. A production-ready version of the car will be displayed at the Auto Expo in February this year, with a market introduction shortly thereafter. The new A-Star / new Zen will compete with a whole gamut of small cars, including the Datsun Go, Hyundai Grand i10 and the forthcoming Ford Ka. Prices for this new small car will range from between Rs 3.75 – 5.25 lakh.
