new maruti swift dzire

WHEN: February 2012

HOW MUCH: Rs 4.8 – 7.5 lakh

ENGINES: 1.2-litre petrol (92 PS), 1.3-litre diesel (75 PS)

COMPETITION: Mahindra Verito, Toyota Etios, Hyundai Accent, Tata Indigo eCS

The new Maruti Swift Dzire is all set to be launched in India in the first week of February. The new Dzire is just 3995 mm long, crucially bringing it within 4-metres in length, which along with the engine restrictions, qualifies it for excise benefits.

The new Dzire is based on the new Swift platform, which means it also benefits from the 40 mm increase in wheelbase, which translates into more interior room. Under the skin, it bears the same technical components, including chassis and drive train as the new Swift.

The new Dzire has been styled a little differently from the Swift though, to differentiate the two cars. The changes include a new grille with wider horizontal slats, and a slightly bigger air intake on the lower front bumper. The two cars are very similar up to the B-pillar. Beyond that, Maruti has has altered the C-pillar to incorporate the new rear end.

The short overall length means the Swift appears more like a notchback than a conventional three-box saloon, but it is an attractive looking car from the rear as well unlike the earlier Dzire which appeared a tad too slab-sided and bulky. The stylised tail lights and neat boot lid have a hint of the Kizashi, which is a good thing. Boot space, which is 316 litres, is adequate for a weekend getaway, but not all that much more than some premium hatchbacks.

new maruti dzire interiors

Clockwise, from left: Black and beige interiors liven up the ambience; the diesel version is sure t be the stronger seller; 4-speed AT option with the petrol engine in VXi trim

The new Dzire uses exactly the same engines as the Swift hatchback, including the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel and 1.2-litre K12M petrol engines, mated to 5-speed gearboxes. The gear ratios are unchanged as well, which should mean that performance of both cars will be similar. Both the petrol and diesel models will be offered in three trim levels. Interestingly, Maruti has also chosen to offer the new Swift Dzire with a 4-speed automatic as well, in the mid-spec VXi trim. This strategy is similar to what Maruti has adopted for the A-Star automatic as well. The interiors are identical to the new Swift, but Maruti has opted to use lighter beige coloured material for the lower half of the dashboard and the upholstery, like in the earlier model.

The existing Swift Dzire will continue to be produced, according to Maruti. It will appeal to those looking for a sedan with a big boot, and would continue to attract fleet sales among others.

Maruti says the price of the new Dzire won’t be much more than the present model, with the new car expected to be priced just marginally higher.
