201427 Jan

Jan 15, 2014 Update: Mercedes-Benz India is unlikely to launch the new C-Class in the country before 2015, according to a top official within the company. The focus for 2014 will be on Mercedes' Premium compact range, including the new CLA sedan and GLA SUV.

New Mercedes C-Class Set for 2014 Geneva Motor Show Debut

WHEN: Late 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 30-35 lakh

ENGINES:

COMPETITION: BMW 3 Series, Audi A4

Mercedes' all-new C-Class (W 250) will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2014. The new C-Class is the best-selling model in Mercedes' line-up with over 10 million units sold since 1982. The C-Class moniker was first used in 1993, albeit the model's lineage can be traced back to the Mercedes-Benz 190 of 1982.

The new C-Class is a revolutionary model even by Mercedes’ high engineering standards. The W 205 platform is engineered using an intelligent mix of materials, including ultra-high strength steel, aluminium and some composites. The resultant body-shell is thus 100 kilos lighter than the current-generation car. Lighter weight means dividends in performance, fuel economy and emissions. However, Mercedes claims that the new C-Class is not only light, but extremely safe as well.

The new-for-2014 C-Class has also been engineered to accept Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel drive system even on right-hand drive models, which will allow the new C-Class to compete with Audi’s A4 quattro and BMW 3 Series xDrive models all around the world.

Standard steel suspension is offered on the new C-Class, although customers have the option of Mercedes’ AIR-MATIC suspension, borrowed from the uber-luxurious S-Class. The suspension itself features a new four-link design for the front suspension.

A range of engines will be offered, including a 1.6-litre petrol motor producing 125 PS, a 1.8-litre supercharged petrol, and a new 3.5-litre V6 petrol motor which should be popular in the US market. Diesel engine options include the familiar 2.2-litre four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6, although the new C-Class could also get a new 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine currently under development by Nissan. This last engine could be a significant for the Indian market.

The new AMG version of the C-Class will ditch the naturally-aspirated 6.2-litre V8 in favour of a new twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8. There’s a new M3 due at the Detroit Motor Show in January, so the new C-Class AMG will be a little behind it in getting to market. Whether it will retain the C63 designation, or whether Mercedes opts for another number is not yet clear. However, a four-wheel drive version of the hot AMG model is almost a certainty.

Mercedes has lavished a lot of time and attention on the interior. These are the first official pictures from the company, and clearly show the organic theme which is becoming increasingly popular. Three central AC vents is another design feature we’ve seen on Mercedes’ NGCC range, including the A-Class, B-Class and CLA, and the new C-Class also sports this familiar design theme. However, what the C-Class does bring new to this segment is a head-up display for the driver, which displays critical information like speed and navigation instructions. High-tech and high-quality materials go a long way in making a car feel special, and Mercedes wants to re-write the class benchmark in this department. The touch-screen infotainment display is another area that Mercedes has been working on, and it features pinch to zoom, swipe and haptic feedback like all new-age smartphones. There’s a trackpad and simplified COMAND keypad as well.

The new C-Class also automatically detects whether a child seat has been installed in any of the seats, front or rear, and deactivates the airbag automatically. When the child seat has been removed, the airbag is re-activated automatically as well.

Another feature which has been borrowed from the larger S-Class is the AIR-BALANCE system with active fragrancing and de-ionisation, although this will be a cost extra.

Apart from the conventional four-door sedan and five-door estate, Mercedes will also build coupe and cabriolet versions of the new C-Class. In fact, the new C-Class Cabriolet, due in 2015, will be the smallest and cheapest convertible from Mercedes. It will most likely use a folding cloth top.

As far as prices are concerned, we expect a 2 to 3 percent increase in prices for the new C-Class. An Indian-market launch will most probably happen in the latter half of 2014.
