CLA-Class-Front

WHEN: December 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 20-24 lakh

ENGINES: 1.8-litre petrol, 2.2-litre diesel

COMPETITION:
BMW 1 Series,  Audi A3

At the launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG in India on July 2014, Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India has announced the the German carmaker will be launching the CLA premium entry-level four-door coupe within  the next 180 days. So a December 2014 launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLA is on the cards. The CLA will enter the Mercedes-Benz line-up beneath the C-class and above corresponding A-class and B-Class models and will compete with the Audi A3 and the BMW 1 Series.

Codename C117, the Mercedes-Benz CLA is the third model to be based on Mercedes-Benz's new modular front-wheel-drive platform. It follows on from the second-generation B-class and third-generation A-class, with which it shares its mechanical package, electric architecture and interior appointments.

CLA-Class-Interior

The base CLA 180 variant will be powered by a four-cylinder 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine. A turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine will appear in the top-of-the-line CLA 250. The only diesel model at launch will be the CLA 220 CDI, powered by a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine. Other engines will follow, including a highly tuned turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder developed by AMG.

All engines are mounted transversely and drive the front wheels through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, but for the Indian market, Mercedes-Benz is likely to stick with the 7-speed DCT transmission. A 4Matic four-wheel drive option will be available in other markets, but is unlikely to come to India.

CLA-Class-Side

The Mercedes-Benz CLA is 4630mm long, 1777mm wide and stands 1437mm tall. The chassis of the CLA features a MacPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension, featuring three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are virtually independent of one another. A CLA-specific feature is the flexible decoupling of the rear axle carrier, which benefits ride comfort. Wheel carriers and spring links consist of aluminum, in order to reduce the unsprung masses. Two chassis and suspension set-ups are available: the comfort suspension and the sports suspension for sporty yet comfortable handling. The latter entails lowering of the body by 20 mm (front) and 15 mm (rear).

Mercedes-Benz has packed the CLA with a slew of safety features. Standard-fit systems include drowsiness-detecting Attention Assist and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist that helps to boost braking from a speed of 4mph to avoid or reduce the severity of impacts. Optional safety systems include Distronic Plus, which complements Collision Prevention Assist and is engineered to provide autonomous braking at speeds of up to 124mph. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 19 mph and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at speeds of up to 12 mph.

CLA-Class-Rear

The CLA will give Mercedes-Benz a chance to draw in a huge number of customers they didn't have access to before, especially in markets where the A-class isn't sold. It will be primarily aimed at appealing to young professionals and two income families. The new Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series are likely to hit the market before the CLA, which means that the three-pointed star will have its work cut out for it once it goes on sale.

HOW MUCH: Rs 70-80 Lakh

ENGINE: 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, twin turbo

COMPETITION: None

It clearly seems to be the year of the AMGs. Within months of launching the GL 63 and ML 63 AMG, German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the CLA 45 AMG four-door coupe in India on Tuesday, July, 22, 2014 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG is the performance avatar of the CLA premium four-door coupe. Going by the present situation, it seems that the CLA won't get here before 2015, so in the interim Mercedes-Benz is launching the CLA 45 AMG as a CBU.

Mercedes-Benz-CLA-45-AMG-Rear

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG is 4691mm long, 1777mm wide and stands 1416mm tall. The chassis of the CLA 45 AMG features McPherson front axle and an independent multilink rear suspension, featuring three control arms and one trailing arm per wheel. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG sports flared bumpers with wide air dams and intakes, side-skirt and special badging - like the turbo on the side and AMG at the rear and on the wheels, and the AMG exhaust pipes.

The Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG is an ideal combination of compact proportions and an AMG engine blended together for delivering sporty performance. The CLA 45 AMG is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder twin turbo mated to an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed sports transmission. The engine produces 360 PS at 6,000 rpm and churns out 450 Nm of peak torque between 2,250 – 5,000 rpm.  The CLA 45 AMG can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 4.6 seconds and boasts of an electronically limited top speed of 270 kmph.
