WHEN: 2014

HOW MUCH: Rs 12 - 16 LAKH

ENGINES: 1.5-litre 110 PS diesel

COMPETITION: Hyundai Tucson

Nissan Motor India is evaluating the Qashqai crossover for an Indian market launch in 2014. If this materialises, the Qashqai will sit above the soon-to-be-launched Terrano in Nissan’s Indian passenger vehicle line-up.

The Nissan Qashqai has proved very popular in Europe. It is available in two versions – the standard 5-seat Qashqai, and the 7-seater Qashqai+2. The Nissan Qashqai is powered by a number of powertrain options, but for India, the 110 PS 1.5-litre dCi diesel will be the most obvious choice. Other engines include a 2.0-litre diesel and 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre petrol variants. Four-wheel drive is available as a cost option.

When launched, Nissan claimed the Qashqai would be all things to all people – a large family hatchback with the versatility of an MPV, the go-anywhere capability of an SUV and coupe-like desirability. While melding all these claims is a tough ask for any car, the Qashqai has nevertheless proved popular.

The new Qashqai is due soon however, based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Common Module Family (CMF) architecture. The new Qashqai could see a global debut as early as next month, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It is likely that the styling of the new Qashqai will borrow some elements from the Resonance concept vehicle, which was created by Nissan Design America, in San Diego, California.

As mentioned earlier, the Qashqai is available in both 5-seat and 7-seater versions, and it is likely that Nissan India will launch the larger 7-seat model, known in Europe as the Qashqai+2. This is for obvious reasons, as Indians are known to prefer larger vehicles with more seats at such a price point.

The Qashqai it must be noted is not a true-blue SUV, but has instead been derived from a car platform. However, the Qashqai is better because of this, boasting very impressive dynamics for its segment, while still being extremely comfortable to sit it. The high ground clearance and plush ride quality will be definite plusses on Indian roads.

For Nissan India, the Qashqai would prove to be a strong contender, given Nissan’s SUV pedigree and the fact that it lacks a product in the Rs 12-16 lakh bracket. In fact, some sources claim that Nissan has even deferred the launch of the Sylphy/Sentra D-segment saloon, which would have cost a similar amount of money, to focus on bringing the new Qashqai to market as soon as possible. Toru Hasegawa, VP of Nissan Middle East, Africa and India hinted as much at the recent unveiling of the Datsun Go in Gurgaon. While refusing to divulge any details, Hasegawa was emphatic about the Japanese company’s plans to launch up to 10 new products in the Indian market, targeting a 10 percent market share by FY17. The new Nissan Qashqai might just go some way towards achieving that goal, especially in India where SUVs and crossovers are enjoying huge popularity and strong sales.
