As the first Porsche in the compact SUV segment, and the sixth unique product from the iconic sports car manufacturer, the Macan boasts of sports car pedigree and dynamic driving performance, on both paved roads and uneven terrain.

In a statement released to the press, the Porsche has stated that “the Macan combines the typical handling characteristics that Porsche has represented right from the outset. The sporting DNA of the Macan, as with all Porsche vehicles, is immediately recognisable in the design, with several styling cues being taken from other Porsche sports cars.”

The Macan, which means Tiger in Indonesian, will be produced at the Leipzig factory in Germany. Porsche has invested 500 million Euros (Rs 3500 crore approx.) in the plant and established an entirely new production line. The line is set up to produce around 50,000 vehicles per year as Porsche expects the Macan to rake in the numbers.

The Porsche Macan has a low, broad profile on the road. The wraparound bonnet and sloping roof line accentuate the overall impression of sports SUV. Design cues have been taken from other Porsche cars including the bigger Porsche Cayenne SUV which helps to create the Macan’s identity as a true blue Porsche.

On the inside the Porsche Macan features a long central console with its array of buttons that give you a cockpit-like feel, the low steering wheel and dashboard height make it feel particularly sporty, and the big front seats are ergonomically perfect.

The Porsche Macan will be offered with four engine option at the time of launch. The Porsche Macan S is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo engine that delivers 345 PS and accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.2 seconds. The 3.6-litre V6 bi-turbo engine in the Macan Turbo produces 406 PS and accelerates the vehicle to 100 kmph in 4.8 seconds. With a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine and 262 PS, the Macan S Diesel is the long-distance sports car. The engine accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in 6.3 seconds.

Porsche has also disclosed its plans for a cheaper Porsche Macan, powered by a 2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. This engine has 240 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. In India, however, we are likely to get the Macan Turbo and the Macan S Diesel. Technical highlights include Porsche Traction Management (PTM) active all-wheel drive and the Porsche PDK double-clutch transmission fitted as standard.

Porsche is also offering three different types of suspension on the new Macan. The standard steel suspension can be upgraded to Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM, on the Macan S and Macan diesel. PASM also comes with three pre-programmed modes, called Comfort, Sport and Sport, which can be selected by a button on the centre console. PASM will comes as standard fitment on the Macan Turbo, but optional on the Macan S and Macan Diesel.

We expect the Porsche Macan to be priced from Rs 65 lakh onwards in India for the diesel, with the Turbo costing Rs 80 lakh approximately.
