Indian auto major Tata Motors has unveiled the Nexon design concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo held in February. The Nexon will mark Tata Motors’ foray into the compact SUV segment which has been a booming in the Indian automotive space, over the last two years.

The Tata Nexon will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotron petrol engine and 1.3-litre turbocharged Quadrajet diesel engine. Both the powerplants will be mated to a 5-speed manual transmission with the possibility that an automatic transmission to be offered in the future.

Being under 4-meter in length, the Tata Nexon compact SUV will also qualify for the excise benefits in India which will result in competitive pricing. Also the fact that the Tata Nexon will be built on the same X1 platform that underpins the Vista and soon-to-be launched Bolt and Zest will lead to further reduction in production cost.

The Tata Nexon design concept looked quite impressive, however, the production model is expected to be different. While the external dimensions will be similar with the Nexon measuring under 4-metres in length, the MegaPixel inspired compact SUV will not feature scissor doors, floating seats, and a glass roof. Also, the Tata Nexon will ride on 16-inch wheels instead of the 17-inch wheels like its concept counterpart, however, high ground clearance is expected to be in excess of 200 mm. The vehicle will come equipped with a lot of features that have been showcased on the recently unveiled Bolt and Zest.

Tata Nexon compact SUV will compete with the Ford EcoSport, Maruti XA Alpha, Hyundai ix25, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Expect Tata Motors to price the Nexon between Rs 5.5 - Rs 8 lakh with the launch taking place close to Diwali 2015.
