How do you improve upon the best-selling car in the world? That’s a tough question to answer, but Toyota is gearing up to replace the popular Corolla sedan with an all-new model in 2014. It will retain all the Toyota goodness of build quality, reliability and fuel efficiency, but will sharpen its fangs in other areas, namely style, features and value. Read on to find out more.

More than 30 million units of the Toyota Corolla have been sold in the nearly 50 years of this model’s existence. (The Corolla debuted in 1967). In nearly five decades, the Corolla has undergone 11 model changes, each time getting substantively bigger. Now however, Toyota is pushing the limits further still, with the new Corolla expected to be the biggest yet.

Toyota Furia concept

The strongest clues come in form of the Corolla Furia concept, which Toyota previewed at the Detroit Motor Show in January. The Corolla is arguably one of Toyota’s most significant models, and America is the Japanese company’s single biggest market, so previewing the new car there made most sense. The Furia concept sits on a 2,700 mm wheelbase, which is a full 100 mm longer than the outgoing Corolla. The increased wheelbase should benefit the interior space, especially rear legroom, which although substantial cannot be called class leading.

The new Corolla features an entirely new layout, with a lot more features. Full-suite connectivity, including Bluetooth, reverse camera etc expected to be part of stabdard equipment.

As you can see with the Furia concept, Toyota has worked hard to address one primary criticism, which has been related to the present generation Corolla’s styling. With the drama that cars like Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic bring to the party, the Corolla’s plain Jane styling has put off a few potential customers. The tighter skinning, matched to aggressive front end styling as seen on the Furia, should ensure that the next Corolla is a looker.

The new Corolla will also likely carry over the 1.8-litre petrol and 1.4-litre diesel engines from the present car, although  a larger 2.0-litre petrol will continue to be offered in the US as an option. The Japanese market spec 1.5-litre petrol might also find its way under the bonnet is some other markets as well. The petrol is expected to benefit from a 6-speed manual gearbox, which will replace the present 5-speed unit. The archaic 4-speed automatic will also soon be on its way out. Toyota insiders have confirmed that the company is working on a new 6-speed automatic. This new automatic gearbox will be able to handle varying degrees of torque, and will be used across a range of Toyota products, including possibly the larger Camry sedan and the RAV4 SUV as well, although for now the company is persisting with 4-speed 'box.

Longer wheelbase and thin front seat backs mean more legroom inside.

The all-new Corolla will likely make its debut in one of two venues this year, which could be either the Frankfurt Motor Show in October, or the Tokyo Motor Show the following month. Sales will commence early in 2014. Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) will assemble the new car in India for domestic market.

For a car as significant to the Toyota’s brand and its identity, and the fact that the car sells in more than 100 markets worldwide, the new Corolla will have to be a whole lot more car than the model it replaces. Competition is catching up worldwide, not least of all from cars like the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Mazda 3. The VW Jetta, which has recently gone on sale in the US, is another big threat.
