Toyota-Etios-Cross

WHEN: May 2014
HOW MUCH: Rs 5 - 7.5 lakh
ENGINES: 1.5-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine
COMPETITION: Fiat Avventura, VW Cross Polo, Ford EcoSport

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. (TKM) has unveiled the New Etios Cross at the 12th Auto Expo in Delhi. The New Etios Cross will further expand the Etios family along with its existing models- The Etios, the Liva and the Liva 1.5 TRD Sportivo. The prices of the New Toyota Etios Cross will be announced in May 2014 along with the sales launch. Bookings for the New Etios Cross have commenced on the down payment of Rs 50,000.

The new Toyota Etios Cross will be available in a 1.5-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel engine, which are the same three engines from the Etios family. This first crossover vehicle from Toyota is positioned as a youthful yet rugged offering and will come equipped with features such as grille guard, side cladding, diamond cut alloys, roof rails, bold front grille, rear cladding with badging and roof spoiler, fog lamps with integrated turn indicators, ORVMs with turn indicators, rear defogger with wiper, piano black interiors, seat fabric with white stitch and logo, 2 DIN audio with Bluetooth, USB and AUX-in, steering mounted audio controls, dual front SRS airbags and ABS with EBD. Of course, it isn't really endowed with off-road ability, but the plastic cladding and preumably higher ground clearance do give it street cred.

The New Etios Cross is available in a new Inferno Orange and seven other colours- Ultramarine Blue, Classic Grey, Symphony Silver, Celestial Black, White, Vermilion Red and Harmony Beige.

Toyota hopes the new Etios Cross will revive tthe flagging fortunes of the Liva hatchback, on which it is based. Depending on the market's reaction to this new introduction, we might see some reorganisation of Toyota's India portfolio.

The most obvious direct competitor to the Etios Cross will be the Fiat Avventura, which was also revealed at the Auto Expo, and also Volkswagen's Cross Polo. These vehicles are essentially regular hatchbacks with crossover looks.

Pricing will be key to achieving good sales figures, especially since the Ford EcoSport, which looks like a proper mini-SUV, is so comptitively priced. By our estimate, prices for the Etios Cross should start just below the Rs 5 lakh mark for the 1.2-litre petrol version.
